COLUMBUS – The Commissioner’s Court approved a proclamation to recognize Oct. 1 through Oct. 7 as National 4-H Week in Colorado County.

It was in Marseilles, France; the year 1599 AD. The reason: to “establish policies to govern trade.” And so began what is known today as a chamber of commerce. The underlying idea was “businesses joining together in a mutual effort to increase commerce… and to establish policies to govern trade.” In the United States the oldest chamber of commerce is New York State Chamber of Commerce, which was “chartered by King George III in 1770…today there are over 5,000 chambers of commerce.” Historically, the chamber served as the hub for business enterprises; and today chambers continue to serve as that hub. Recognized nationally as the place to look for business and community information makes them one of the top organizations that businesses call when scoping out potential investment and/or development. They also serve as one of the first places visitors stop when coming into a community to learn about that community, find places to stay and eat, things to do, and where even locals call for community information.

Share your Christmas is a ministry of First United Methodist Church of Columbus whose purpose is to share Christ’s love during the holiday season to families in need of Columbus, Glidden and Alleyton.

The Rice Raiders lost their first district game of the season to the Tidehaven Tigers on Friday, Sept. 22, by a score of 52-0.

ALTAIR – The Rice Lady Raiders volleyball team lost two district games last week to Yoakum and Tidehaven to give them a 1-4 record in district play this season. The loss knocked the Lady Raiders down from 5th to 7th place in the standings, but they have not lost sight of their goal this season of improving from last season. With nine games left on their schedule, the Lady Raiders will continue to work every day towards their goal of improvement.

The Rice JV traveled to Tidehaven and lost 36-14, on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The Rice Raiders competed in two cross country meets recently, one at McNeil and the other was the Coach Ed meet in Sealy on Friday and Saturday respectively.

The Weimar Wildcats lost their first district matchup against the Holland Hornets by a score of 43-22 Friday, Sept. 22, on the road in Holland.

The Weimar Wildcats cross country team traveled to participate in the Needville invitational on Thursday, Sept 21, in Needville.

The WJHS Ladycats played Flatonia in Weimar on Monday, Sept. 11. Flatonia has just three teams so only the eighthgrade teams and the seventh- grade A team played. The eighth-grade B-team won both games 25-15 and 25-11. The Ladycats had some fantastic serving by Karina Martinez and Angelic Jenkins. The eighth-grade A-team won in two games, 25-10 and 25-8. MJ Griffin had 12 serves, Kailea Burley had eight serves and Ty’Rianna Rhodes had six serves. Zariah Sims had three big hits and Victoria Sherwood played well on the net.

The Weimar Ladycats picked up their first two wins of their district schedule last week in dominant fashion. The Ladycats went to battle with the Flatonia Bulldogs on Tuesday, Sept. 19, then came back for more against the Louise Hornets on Saturday, Sept. 23, to open district play. The Ladycats knew these were big games and they did not miss a beat when it came to handling business.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Elementary School’s Parent/Teacher Organization benefitted from the donations of Dollar General after the corporation delivered a $4 thousand grant to aid the school with supplies.

At St. Michael Catholic School in Weimar, the third grade won the Spirit Stick for most-spirited class during the first school pep rally.
