The Columbus Lady Cardinals had a weekend filled with the excitement of the game of basketball taking on Belton, Alvarado, Levelland and Gunter.

The Lady Cards picked up a big win over Alvarado in their first game at the tournament but unfortunately dropped back-to-back games to close out the tournament.

@ Belton, W, 36-25

The Lady Cards emerged victorious over Belton in a very close game that.

The Lady Cardinals are still getting into the flow of their season and are playing in tournament to get themselves going so they can be ready for district play. The Lady Cards made some mistakes in this game but quickly fixed them and started to stack points.

Once they were in the driver seat their defense shut down the court the rest of the game and handed Belton a loss.

@ Alvarado, W, 63-57

The Lady Cards started the tournament off with a tight win over Alvarado to start things off on the right foot.

The Lady Cards outscored Alvarado 18-9 in the first quarter and were feeling comfortable heading into the second. Alvardo was not out of it yet though and brought an aggressive style of play with them in the second quarter.

Alvarado outscored the Lady Cards 2201 in the second quarter and put tons of pressure on them before half time. The second quarter surge from Alvarado gave them a lead of 31-29 right before halftime and it left a sour taste in the Lady Cards mouth.

They used that sour taste to have a surge of their own I the third scoring 20 points to Alvarado’s 11 bringing the score to 49-42. Entering the final frame both teams knew they would have to empty their tanks if they were going to win this game.

The fourth quarter was the most intense because one miscue led to point for the other team. The teams went back and forth running up and down the court as time ticked off and both teams scratched and clawed to secure a victory.

When the final buzzer sounded the Lady Cards lead was still intact and celebrated their victory.

@ Levelland, L, 70-39

Coming off their hardfought victory the Lady Cards had to quickly turn around and jump into another game.

The Lady Cards struggled to get anything going on offense and Levelland tore through their defense to start the game. The Lady Cards were outscored 25-11 to start the game and could never recover from it.

They were able to slow Levelland down some in the second quarter and started to cut into their lead a little bit but ran out of time because the buzzer sounded to end the second quarter. With the score at 37-19 at halftime Levelland continued to press the Lady Cards once the third quarter started.

Levelland outscored the Lady Cards 20-14 to make the score 57-33 before the final quarter. The Lady Cards put up a good fight in the last quarter, but the Levelland lead was too much to overcome and handed the Lady Cards their first loss.

@ Gunter, L, 50-31

The Lady Cards closed out the tournament against a familiar foe in the Gunter Tigers.

The game followed a similar path as their game against Levelland where the Tigers built a large lead early in the game that was big enough to secure a win.

Leading 24-8 at halftime the Tigers were able to hold off the Lady Cards offense in the second half and secure a victory.

The Lady Cards enjoyed the rest of their weekend and began looking a head to their next game against Edna on Tuesday, Dec. 5, on their home court.
