The Columbus High School Class of 1953 will celebrate their 70th reunion on Saturday, May

COLUMBUS – The fifth-grade classes of Columbus Elementary School and St. Anthony Catholic School will bury a time capsule on Thursday, May 11 on the Courthouse Square at 2 p.m.

COLUMBUS – The Nesbitt Memorial Library, 529 Washington St., invites the public to view the 1973 time capsule contents from Monday through Saturday during its open hours.

THUNDER BY THE COLORADO RETURNS

WEIMAR – The Shropshire- Upton chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held a Confederate Memorial Day Service at the historic Osage Community Cemetery on April 13.

COLUMBUS – Five Columbus High School seniors each received $1,000 scholarships presented by the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1127 for future education at colleges or technical schools.

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust, Inc. has launched its latest community project, “Seasons of Colorado County,” a hardbound, coffee table photo book dedicated to celebrating Colorado County’s residents, heritage, and natural beauty.

DENTON – The Center for Women Entrepreneurs, a program of the Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership at Texas Woman’s University, will begin accepting applications for its Texas Rural Woman Grant on May 15.

The World Literacy Foundation is looking for young people in Texas who aspire to be an advocate and changemaker for the issue of illiteracy over the summer. It’s estimated 65% of children from underserved communities in Texas struggle to read and write.

COLUMBUS – This week is Teacher Appreciation Week (May 8-12) and Columbus Elementary School is celebrating its teachers not just for the work they do with students, but for their commitment to improving their teaching skills.

COLUMBUS PTO RECEIVE $1,000 FROM LIONS CLUB

LA GRANGE – Two local restaurants, Celebrations! and Lulus!, held dinners in February with HeartBrand Beef providing steaks for the event. The proceeds from the dinners benefited the Red Door Fund for Mental Health of the Fayette Community Foundation, to support mental health awareness, services and providers in the area.

The John Everett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized John and Brenda Buehler for their proper display of the American Flag for the month of May. The chapter gave the Buehlers a Certificate of Award and the DAR yard sign. John told the chapter that the two 35 foot flag poles located at the entrance of the Buehler property were gifted to him by the developer of Cinco Ranch in 2007. John said there were three flag poles displayed at the original information centre and library prior to the land being sold. Knowing the new property owner would dispose of them, he offered them to John. He accepted. The 38-foot pole is on display of the property of a friends ranch outside of Mason, Texas. John also said, displaying the American Flag and the DAR yard sign reminded him of the song, “I’m Proud to be an American.”

COLUMBUS – In memory of the fallen and in honor of the Peace Officers and Law Enforcement of Colorado County, the public is invited to attend a Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony on Monday, May 15 on the west side of the Courthouse at 6 p.m.

COLUMBUS – The annual springtime festival is set to return to the historic Courthouse Square next weekend.

WEIMAR – The Friends of the Weimar Library and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office of Colorado County invites the public to attend a free program about weed identification strategies and tips on May 26.

Early voting closed on Tuesday, May 2 with over 433 voters as of Monday, according to the Colorado County Elections Office.
