Residents are invited to join a virtual public-engagement forum and wrap-up Sept. 28 on the 1093 Rails to Trails Project from Eagle Lake to Fulshear, organizers said.
The interactive meeting hosted via Zoom is 5:30-7 p.m. To register, visit the project website at 1093railstotrails. weebly.com.
A collaboration of five local governments gave rise to the 1093 Rails to Trails Local Government Corp., an initiative that aims to convert a 31-mile former rail corridor, west of Houston, into a shared-use trail for the community, officials said.
This summer, LGC hosted public-input meetings in Eagle Lake, Wallis and Fulshear to answer questions and hear comments from community members.
Established in February 2022, the nonprofit LGC represents Austin County and the cities of Eagle Lake, Fulshear, Wallis and Weston Lakes.
According to a release, “The group’s alliance with the Fort Bend Toll Road Authority is poised to foster the development of this trail alongside FM 1093, offering residents a myriad of possibilities, from hiking and biking to serving as a connector between communities and other regional trail initiatives.”
LGC officials said the project will benefit the region.
“Our partnership with the National Parks Service is an exciting step forward,” said Belinda Halfin, LGC president. “Through public engagement, our objective is to capture the essence of every community the trail traverses, ensuring its design resonates with the unique character and aspirations of its residents.”
The first three public meetings, held during March, April and June, saw a turnout with over 120 attendees.
During the Sept. 28 meeting, participants will be welcomed into online breakout rooms to discuss previously gathered feedback, engage with the proposed ideas and help cement the public’s vision for this transformative project, planners said.
“We believe the 1093 Rails to Trails project is poised to be a remarkable asset for our communities. We urge the public to join in, share their insights and be part of bringing this vision to life,” Halfin said.
