The John Everett Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution honored four high school students with a Good Citizens Award at their Feb. 12 meeting.

The teacher for sixth and eighth grade at Columbus Junior High, Amanda Opperman, recently received a grant from the Columbus Education Foundation to take her students on a field trip to Nasa Space Station.

The Lower Colorado River Authority is considering requiring its firm water customers to adopt a maximum once-per-week watering schedule that would apply anytime the combined storage of lakes Buchanan and Travis falls below 900,000 acre-feet, or 45% of capacity, including this spring if combined storage is below that level.

COLUMBUS –The City Council had a few actions to review and move on during their Feb. 12 regular meeting. The council discussed several items including the Nesbitt Memorial Library’s annual report as well as deciding when the annual Trash-Off event in the spring will be.

WEIMAR – A full docket for City Council meant there was plenty to discuss at their Feb. 8 regular meeting. The Council held discussions over the initiatives to improve water quality, recognized different events around town and heard from a former employee seeking longevity pay following his time as a city employee.

COLUMBUS – The Commissioners Court made several actions at the Feb. 12 regular meeting as they confirmed several days of use for the courthouse grounds and discussed the opening of the new elections building.

Columbus Lions help with preservation campaign

Billy Ray “Bill” Berger, was a man with character and a deep devotion to his family. A man whose humor was infectious, and whose selflessness ran deeper than the rivers and bays he fished. Bill passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2024 at the age of 73. He lived a life full of adventure, hard work, and an ever-present helping hand.

Allen Wendel of Mentz, Texas, passed away Feb. 6, 2024 in Hillje, Texas. Mr. Wendel was born March 22, 1929 in Mentz, Texas to Edmund Wendel and Clara Braden Wendel. He was the sixth of eight children.

Colorado County prides itself on assisting voters with getting their ballots cast and making sure the voices of Colorado County voters are heard by providing accurate voting results.

Columbus Elementary School will be asking parents of new pre-k and kindergarten students to bring their required documents to the school for a registration event at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2.

The Colorado County Elections Office has made an official statement regarding when results of the upcoming primary elections will be released.

The kids are out for President’s Day on Monday, Feb. 19 and families will need a place to go to get out of the house for a while.

The American Legion hosted an Oratorical Competition for Columbus ISD students to potentially earn scholarships for schooling after graduation. Columbus High School senior Alley Fitzgerald competed and was awarded a $500 scholarship by Columbus Post 383 Adjutant Herb Fish.

The Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas welcomed self-described “history buff,” Daniel Newsom with the local Texas Historical Shootist Society at their Jan. 23 meeting.

WEIMAR – At the most recent City Council meeting, Weimar Police Chief Mark Jameson gave another commendation for the actions of one of his officers.
