Lady Raiders take a big loss to Hallettsville
HALLETTSVILLE – The Rice varsity softball team has struggled to score runs all season as they attempt to create some consistency in their offense. They have been engaging in a similar crusade on the defensive end as they often struggle to slow down their opponents’ offenses. The first place Brahmettes recognized and took advantage of the Lady Raiders’ deficiencies from the open as the Lady Raiders fell in a big 22-0 defeat. 03/29/2023 12:00 AM

Raiders fall in two straight blowouts
The Rice Raiders’ baseball team has been falling victim to some of the same issues as they traverse a difficult season. Many of their problems are found on the defensive side of the ball as they struggle to find enough consistency to keep their opponents from having huge games offensively. Several opponents have scored into the double digits against Rice’s pitching and defense. On the other side of the ball, the Raiders have shown difficulties in getting on base and putting themselves into scoring positions on the base path. Many of these factors showed up once again during the Raiders’ last week of competition as they fell in two straight games after allowing over 20 runs in each. 03/29/2023 12:00 AM

NEEDVILLE – The Columbus Cardinals’ soccer team travelled into enemy territory to take on the Needville Bluejays in the first round of the UIL state playoffs. The Cards went up against an imposing opponent as the Jays’ mix of high-pressure defense and ability to keep possession of the ball led to a championship in their district. The Cards witnessed how difficult those factors were to deal with in real time as the Bluejays scored a goal in each half to take the 2-0 victory. 03/29/2023 12:00 AM

Quality pitching leads to pair of shutouts for Cards
This season has been an important one for the staff of pitchers and fielders on the Cards’ varsity baseball team. Many of their wins have been due to defensive success led by quality outings on the mound as well as limited mistakes on the field. Last week, the Cards continued their excellence on defense with back-toback victories over district opponents. Columbus found just enough offense to help support their efforts on the other side of the ball as their defense forced two shutout wins and extended their winning streak to six games. 03/29/2023 12:00 AM

BAY CITY – The Lady Cards’ soccer team made it to the postseason after having the best season in the program’s history. At 17 wins, seven losses and four ties, their best record in history led to their highest district placement as well. The second-place finishers in the district reached these accolades with an impressive defense as well as standout playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Their defensive effectiveness continued with a solid performance against the Brazosport Lady Exporters in Round 1, but their offense could not support their efforts defensively as they just missed out on a few opportunities that stifled their efforts. After a hardfought game, the Lady Cards bowed out of the postseason in the Bi-District championship round after a 1-0 loss. 03/29/2023 12:00 AM
