Columbus track teams take top-3 placements in Bulldog Relays

FLATONIA – The Columbus varsity track team found great levels of success in last week’s regular season meet as both the boys and girls took top team placements. The Lady Cards had an outstanding eight gold medals from their events as they finished in second place overall with 176 points. The Cards finished the meet in third place as a team after securing a few gold medals of their own. Columbus will be looking to continue their momentum throughout the rest of the season as their performances have improved at each sequential meet.

FLATONIA – The Columbus varsity track team found great levels of success in last week’s regular season meet as both the boys and girls took top team placements. The Lady Cards had an outstanding eight gold medals from their events as they finished in second place overall with 176 points. The Cards finished the meet in third place as a team after securing a few gold medals of their own. Columbus will be looking to continue their momentum throughout the rest of the season as their performances have improved at each sequential meet.

The girls had one of their best outings of the season as their eight gold medals and 18 total medals marked their highest totals of the season for either category. Taylor Morrow had a strong day in the field events, taking the gold medal in both the long jump and the triple jump. Scarlett Mc-Clelland took the silver medal in both events just behind her fellow Lady Card. McClelland got a gold medal of her own in the 100 m dash as the Lady Cards swept the top three spots in the event. Kaitlyn Torres finished with the silver, and Mariah Woods took bronze in the race. The sprinters teamed up for more excellent performances in the relay races as Columbus took first place in both events. Scarlett Mc-Clelland, TiYana Celestine, Mariah Woods and Taylor Morrow were the Lady Cards racing in the 4X100 m race, and the team of Torres, Woods, Kloee Woytek and Treasure Upson competed in the 4X200 m. Chloe Ross took first place in both the 800 m run and the 1600 m run before taking second in the 3200 m. Ross’s relative Kaylea Foster also had good outings in the long-distance races as she took second in the 800 and third place in the 1600 m and 3200 m. Woytek took the silver medal in the 200 m dash just ahead of McClelland who finished with the bronze medal in the event.

The boys finished with two gold medals that were provided by Ty’Vone Whitehead and Cory Lewis in their respective events. Whitehead finished ahead of the pack in the 100 m dash to take the gold medal, while Lewis took his gold medal in the 300 m hurdles. Both athletes also took silver medals as well with Lewis finishing in second place in the shorter-distance hurdles and Whithead taking second in the 200 m sprint. Hunter Mangum clocked in a strong throw for the discus event and secured second place for his efforts. Daegan Stevens also medaled in field events after taking third place in the shot-put throw. Brody Vinklarek took another silver medal for the Cards in the 400 m dash while Xavier Woods snagged a bronze medal for the high jump event.
