The Lady Cards’ varsity softball team fought to a pair of tight wins during their last week of competition. Nothing came easy for Columbus as they started their week needing a big comeback at home to steal a victory away from one of their district rivals. After taking the win with an offensive explosion, the Lady Cards followed with another tight victory as they finished their undefeated week and picked up their fifth win in the past six outings.
Vs Yoakum, W, 15-12 The Lady Cards were pushed to the limits by third-place Yoakum, the team that currently sits just below Columbus in the district standings. Yoakum started the scoring with an onslaught of runs in the first three innings while holding the Lady Cards’ offense scoreless. The Bulldogettes scored three runs each in the first and second and went into the bottom of the fourth with a 9-0 lead over the Lady Cards. The bottom of the fourth is where Columbus got their first points of the game, scoring four runs in the inning to cut the lead. Yoakum responded with another 3-run inning in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 12-4 before Columbus responded with two more runs at the bottom of that inning.
Columbus flipped the game on its head in the sixth inning. They started with a strong defensive effort in the top of the sixth, holding Yoakum scoreless for the first time in the game. Then, Columbus went on to score nine runs as they built up momentum and forced the Yoakum pitcher to work with bases loaded for much of the inning. The sixth provided all the scoring Columbus would need as they held Yoakum scoreless again in the seventh to claim the victory.
Ellie Brown had a major impact on the game with hits in two of her three at bats that led to four RBIs. Taylor Morrow also had a big swing, bringing home three runners with her lone hit of the game.
Vs Edna, W, 5-4
The Lady Cards’ second game of the week was also a tight affair as they had one of their closest games of the season to date in an extra- innings grapple. The matchup started in the worst possible fashion for Columbus as they allowed four runs to their opponents in the first inning. However, the defense locked in at that point and the Lady Cards held the Cowgirls scoreless for the remainder of the game. Mayson Post got the start on the mound for the Lady Cards, settling in after the first inning for five scoreless innings of work. Karlee Mathis took over from the sixth inning and pitched each of the extra periods.
The Cards started their comeback effort in the second inning after scoring a single run off of a sac-fly from Ally Tribe. Columbus scored again in the fifth inning after taking advantage of an error and scoring after a hit by Molly Garcia. Morrow had the big hit of the game with a triple in the sixth inning that eventually led to her scoring later in the inning to cut the lead to 4-3. Tribe had another big hit of her own in the top of the seventh that led to another error by Edna and a score by Madyson Carter to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
After three scoreless extra innings, the Lady Cards broke the deadlock with a run in the 11th to take the lead. Edna could not respond with a run of their own, and Columbus held on for the victory with every player in the lineup registering at least one hit.
