This season has been an important one for the staff of pitchers and fielders on the Cards’ varsity baseball team. Many of their wins have been due to defensive success led by quality outings on the mound as well as limited mistakes on the field. Last week, the Cards continued their excellence on defense with back-toback victories over district opponents. Columbus found just enough offense to help support their efforts on the other side of the ball as their defense forced two shutout wins and extended their winning streak to six games.
Vs Yoakum, W, 3-0
The Cards’ first game of the week came against a Yoakum team that has been struggling somewhat to score this season. Columbus took advantage of that trend with a strong outing on the mound from Dylan Zajicek. Despite allowing four hits, Zajicek helped hold the Bulldogs scoreless in all seven innings as he pitched a complete game.
The offense for Columbus struggled a bit during the same period as well. The teams were deadlocked at 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Cards scored the only runs of the game. Ryan Lewis and Conner Geisler provided an RBI each as their hits helped Columbus score all three of their runs in the inning.
Vs Edna, W, 5-0
The offense for Columbus had a better outing over the weekend as the Cards played against the Cowboys away from home. However, they once again had a slow start as they failed to score in the first four innings like their performance against Yoakum. Columbus scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning, and after a scoreless sixth inning, they scored four runs in the top of the seventh as insurance to secure their sixth-straight victory.
The Cards’ offensive struggles to begin the game did not lead to much misfortune as they got a quality start from starting pitcher Kaleb Kuhn. He pitched all seven innings and finished with an impressive 15 strikeouts while allowing just one hit. While he and the defense worked to keep things level, Conner Geisler was doing what he could on the offensive end to give the Cards the advantage. Geisler finished as the only Cardinal with multiple hits, and both of his hits resulted in a total of two RBIs for the offense. Logan Hinson also added an RBI as the hitting was much more effective for the Cards to end the week.
