COLUMBUS – The Columbus City Council held a regular meeting on Monday, June 26 to discuss updates in projects and resolutions.

The annual June Cook Off, June 16-17, had 30 paid entries. The event spotlights include a Junior Pitmasters cook off for children 7-12 years old (juniors) and 13-17 years old (senior division). Eligible contestants in this event are members of the Junior Pitmasters Association and children of teams entered in the June Cook-Off who meet the same age criteria as JPA members. It is not a requirement to be a member of the JPA to participate.

COLUMBUS – On July 1, the Columbus Tractor Supply store, 4880 Interstate 10 Road, will host a farmers market featuring locally- grown, fresh produce, as well as other seasonal products.

EAGLE LAKE – The 25th Annual Eagle Lake Fireworks Show is set for Monday, July 3 beginning at 9:15 p.m.

COLUMBUS – Join professor, author, and Purple Heart recipient James Kearney for a talk about his newest book: “Duty to Serve, Duty to Conscience,” co-written with William Clamurro, which details his experience as a 1-A-0 conscientious objector during the Vietnam War on Thursday, June 29 at 6 p.m. at Nesbitt Memorial Library, 529 Washington St.

WEIMAR – The Friends of the Weimar Public Library, 1 Jackson Square, is hosting a Hunter Safety Certification class on Friday, July 14 at the Weimar Junior High cafetorium, 101 North West St.

“Welcome to Columbus!” A common greeting as I meet many citizens of Columbus and surrounding communities. Beginning the position of executive director and director of business and commerce for the Columbus Chamber of Commerce on June 1, I kicked off a full and busy schedule. I quickly realized that becoming firmly planted in the community includes joining the Columbus Lions Club, on my way to being a Rotarian, and attending county, city, and other community meetings. Great groups filled with outstanding citizens!

The Declaration of Independence is a document that indicates the founding principles of the United States of America. The declaration was issued by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and announced the separation of the 13 British colonies in North America from the United Kingdom.

COLUMBUS – There’s a new restaurant and wine bar preparing to open next week that will bring a new vibe to Columbus – a food and wine experience the owners believe will be like none other in the city.

COLUMBUS – The much-anticipated dark green building at 1136 Milam St., which formerly housed Berger Grocery, is now Little Milam, Coffee, Wine & Eatery.

WEIMAR – On Thursday, June 15, the city council held a special meeting to discuss personnel matters pertaining to City Manager Mike Barrow.

EAGLE LAKE – Police Chief Kris Abbott has been ordered to turn in his firearm and badge after being terminated by the city manager on Wednesday, June 14.

WEIMAR – The Bluebonnet Master Gardeners Association Kids Kamp returned to Colorado County on June 13-15.

Contestants are being sought for the Colorado County Membership Queen, Fair Queen, Junior Queen, and Lil Miss and Mister contests at the Colorado County Fairgrounds Founders Hall Thursday, Sept. 7.

The deadline for editorial and advertisements for the July 5 edition of The Citizen will be noon on Thursday, June 29. Content may still be submitted after this time, but content will be prioritized by what is sent before the deadline and then as space allows.

On Thursday, June 15, the Arbor Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Eagle Lake served nachos and had games for residents to help celebrate fathers.

COLUMBUS – The Colorado County Commissioners held a regular meeting on Monday, June 12.

EAGLE LAKE – The Eagle Lake City Council held a regular meeting on Tuesday, June 13 to discuss a new mayor pro tem, adopting a new city logo, and ordinances that need to be evaluated before being adopted this year.

ALTAIR – On May 15, the Rice Consolidated Independent School District held a board meeting to discuss incentives regarding teacher recruitment.
