COLUMBUS — The City Council meeting of Nov. 29 saw the council members discuss and act on several topics including repealing a curfew ordinance and addressing other projects that are to be accomplished in the city.
The city moved to repeal an ordinance that created a curfew for minors within city limits. While establishing a curfew was well within the rights of the city government, the enforcement of such a law is difficult for rural police departments. The ordinance is referred to as being “unenforceable” in the repeal document that officially passed and approved the repeal that came into effect immediately upon signing.
On Dec. 15, the city will begin the process for sewer averaging and continue their assessment through Feb. 15, 2024. During this period, the city will be keeping track of the water used throughout the sewer system to help calculate residential sewer rates for the rest of the upcoming year.
General utilities were discussed as residents can now opt to receive their utility bill through email. To sign up for the email service, contact city hall at 979-732-2366 to inquire and set up service.
Other improvements around town are in motion as the city finalizes plans to replace playground equipment, light fixtures and make improvements to the restroom at Mid-Town Park. The installation of a signal light at Hwy 71 and Fannin Street is still in progress after the contractor successfully installed an electrical meter.
