COLUMBUS — The Commissioners Court met following Thanksgiving to discuss and decide on several action items including reviewing applications by a few companies for energy and broadband installations around town.
The Colorado Valley Telephone company applied to install fiber optic cables underground in the right-of-way of County Road 209. An increased number of fiber optic cables will help improve internet connectivity as data transfer becomes more powerful with the increase. It is part of a continuous process by the company that has already had projects installing the cables underground in the area.
San Bernard Electric Cooperative Inc. will place in two power poles in the right-of-way of Shaws Bend Road after the Commissioners approved their application to continue their construction and improvement of the energy infrastructure in the area.
The County EMS looked to reduce some of the financial strain on residents using ambulance services for medical transit. Historically, private insurance companies would provide a small amount of the coverage for ambulance trips, leaving the resident with a large medical bill. Due to legislation passed in the Texas Congress this year, counties in the state can set a standard rate that insurance companies must provide for each use of service. The Commissioners approved to make changes in the rates to ease some of the burden left behind by insurance companies.
Saturdays on the Square, usually on the second Saturday of the month, will be moved to the third Saturday of December. Due to several events around the county like the Weimar Farmer’s Market and Ladies Night Out in Columbus a few days before, the previously selected date of Dec. 9 placed Saturdays on the Square during a busy time. The Court approved moving the date of the event to Dec. 16.
The Commissioners will meet again on the second Monday of December on Dec. 11 at 9 a.m.
