Eagle Lake native Dr. Sandra C. Thomas was recently honored by the Texas Historical Commission.
She received the Award of Merit from the Commission for her efforts to preserve and advance Texas history through several hundred published articles and several books on local history. She has sponsored, written and researched numerous Texas Historical Markers in Eagle Lake and Colorado County.
Three new markers were recently installed in Eagle Lake and Chesterville, and a marker honoring Texas banker and cattleman Col. Isaac Pryor will be the next installment in Colorado County.
Dr. Thomas encourages all Colorado County Citizens to become engaged in efforts to write and to preserve the area’s local and county history.
In her book, “Writing Our History Together,” she offers a handbook for telling and writing local and family history.
It is through conversations and oral history interviews that the stories and memories of our local citizens are best captured.
“There is no substitute for personal engagement and conversations in getting our stories told,” Dr. Thomas said.
Copies of the oral history handbook are at the Prairie Edge Museum in Eagle Lake. Family and local stories both preserve and advance recorded Texas history and knowledge of the Lone Star State.
“Let’s not leave our stories untold.”
