In 2021, President Joseph Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which established an official holiday to commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The act became law and the holiday was celebrated two days later.

At their meeting on June 6, the Weimar Lions presented Jennifer Owens, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Weimar, Schulenburg and Columbus, with a donation for the club.

Tri-County Realty, LLC has announced the launch of Double G Rea lty Group, recently formed after the merger of Double G Realty, LLC in Columbus with Tri-County Realty, LLC in Weimar.

The Columbus Lions Club, established on June 4, 1943, and chartered on July 22, 1943, is celebrating its 80 years of humanitarian service. The Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club was the sponsoring Club. Back on Aug. 22, 1943, the Club celebrated its beginning with a banquet and the keynote speaker was the Honorable Texas Governor Coke Stevenson. The original charter was received by President J.V. Frnka from District Governor Tom Henderson. There were 29 Charter members.

EAGLE LAKE – The 49th annual Eagle Lake Rice Field Day is scheduled for 4 p.m. June 27 at the Eagle Lake Community Center, 100 N. Walnut Ave.

ALTAIR – The Texas ChalleNGe Academy Class 2022-2 will graduate Saturday, June 17 at Rice Consolidated High School, U.S. 90 Alternate.

COLUMBUS – When people drive down Walnut Street, they may be impressed with the new sidewalks, but what people may not know is that the sidewalk project, which started earlier this year in January by TxDOT, included some partnership between locals and TxDOT officials.

The Little League teams for Columbus have gotten out to a strong start in the season after a few team claimed their respective Area Championships. The 7U softball All-stars as well as the 8U baseball All-stars had strong performances in their final games of area, claiming the championship and moving on to the next level of little league.

WHARTON – Twenty- five students have earned their Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing from Wharton County Junior College. A pinning ceremony was held at the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester on the Wharton campus.

HUNTSVILLE – The following area students received degrees during the 2023 spring semester at Sam Houston State University: -Lisa Janak of Columbus, Master of Library Science in Library Science.
