COLUMBUS — The A Better Columbus organization has its sights set on several beautification efforts around the city after discussing their next steps at the Nov. 8 meeting. Several of those steps include acquiring funds for the program and adding artistic displays around the town.

Murals will be getting a considerable portion of the funding from grants as each of the standing murals require a layer of coating intended to block graffiti, as well as plans to create a new mural on the portion of State Highway 71 that runs underneath the railroad crossing. TxDot requires graffiti-blocking coating on each mural to receive grant fund contributions. ABC is still searching for quotes and concepts from artists for the mural onState Highway 71 as well.

The other main campaign for ABC is the flower fundraiser as they look to add professionally arranged silk flowers at businesses and residences throughout Columbus. The flowers are available for purchase at $250 for residential purchase and at half price for businesses due to a grant from the Columbus Rotary Club.

“ABC is all about collaborating,” ABC President Billy Kahn said on the partnership with the Rotary Club.

The organization emphasized that the flowers are crafted out of silk, meaning that unlike organic flowers, they can withstand the elements all year. The flowers are currently offered in white and red, but more options may be available in the future.

The fundraiser will contribute to their mural fund along with other fundraising efforts planned for the end of the year.

ABC plans to be in attendance at the Lighted Christmas Parade on Tuesday, Nov. 28 and the Ladies Night Out event on Thursday, Dec. 7. One of their planned fundraising efforts is a raffle at Ladies Night Out to potentially win a free flower arrangement.

The organization is preparing to apply for the Chamber of Commerce revitalization grant for the Jan. 15 deadline. ABC has other potential plans such as door-to-door community service on projects up to $250, an affordable housing campaign, as well as the search for a Membership Chair member and Special Projects and Events Chair.
