COLUMBUS — The Nov. 13 Commissioners Court meeting saw the Commissioners decide on action for several different topics including the speed limit on County Road 111, the use of county property by a senior citizen meal service as well as the appointment of a new member to the Colorado County Children’s Protective Services Board.

The Commissioners approved a motion to establish a 40-mph speed limit on County Road 111 instead of the current 60 mph limit. The constant use by large transport trucks and vehicles led to the importance of a lower limit to allow for easier entrance and crossing of the road.

The Children’s Protective Services Board gave their recommendation to appoint Lynn Chambers to an active-duty role with the organization. President of the Board Walt Glasscock led with a report on the actions and goals of the board including their goal to add Chambers to their numbers. The Commissioners voted to appoint Chambers to the board by unanimous decision.

The Wharton County Junior College “Senior Citizen Meals on Wheels” program requested the use of a county building to house the physical location of their operation. With locations in Eagle Lake and Weimar already, the program looked to move to a location in Columbus to provide hot meals to more seniors. The Court could not move to make any action at the meeting as there were limited options for physical buildings the county could provide for use. The Commissioners recommended to reach out to the ministerial alliance as well as the St. Paul Lutheran Church that hosts the Senior Connections program The Sheridan Water Supply Corporation requested a full-time grant writer to help seek and secure grant funding for water supply materials, including new pipelines as they hope to put in larger water lines around the community.

The Fairgrounds were also discussed at Commissioners Court as the committee looks to hire a Fairgrounds Manager as well as use CCIDC grant funds for ongoing expenses and improvements. The Court moved to allow the committee to advertise the position in local media in addition to moving the grant funds into the Fairgrounds Account.

The Commissioners approved for the County Auditor to move to Suite 111 at the Colorado County Annex at 318 Spring St. once the Elections Office moves to its new location. The Elections Office is awaiting repairs and upgrades at the current Justice of the Peace Precinct III location at 1117 Travis St. before moving into the building as the Justice of the Peace Court moves out.

The next Commissioners Court will be held on Nov. 27 at the Colorado County Courthouse at 400 Spring St.
