The county elections office has released the full list of positions up for election at the upcoming primaries. Several incumbents are up for reelection this cycle, and there are a few candidates that will be running unopposed. Below is a list of the positions up for election and the candidates vying for their respective positions. There are no democratic candidates for any local positions in Colorado County. A full voter’s guide with a description of each candidate will be available in the Citizen in the weeks preceding the election.

Senate Bill 1, went into effect Dec. 2, 2021, which includes legislation that impacts Ballot by Mail Operations in Colorado County.

ALLEYTON – The St. Roch Catholic Church will be the host of a blood drive on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 2-7 p.m.

Colorado County members of the Bluebonnet Master Gardener Association are pleased to announce the upcoming Colorado County Lunch-N-Learn Series in Winter/Spring 2024 focused on gardening and horticulture!

COLUMBUS – The Columbus High School band program is preparing for a musical showcase featuring the band director and fellow high-grade musicians on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the high school auditorium.

The 40th anniversary for the Annual Equipping the Saints sponsored by the Bluebonnet Conference of ELCA Congregations will be celebrated in 2024. The all-day event is being hosted by St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 400 N. Esplanade, Cuero on Saturday, Feb. 3. This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Past, Understanding the Present and Preparing for the Future.”

The Turtle Wing Foundation’s annual Toast event is slated for Thursday, Jan. 25 at Sengelmann Hall’s second floor in Schulenburg. Doors open at 6 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar during cocktail hour.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus Chamber of Commerce and First National Bank of Eagle Lake, Columbus Branch would like to extend an invitation to all Columbus Chamber Members to attend the first quarterly mixer of 2024 hosted by FNB on Thursday, Jan. 11, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. First National Bank is located at 408 Walnut St. in beautiful, historic downtown Columbus.

COLUMBUS – The New Greater Smith Chapel Baptist Church at 833 Preston St. will be celebrating a major milestone on Sunday, Jan. 14 as they host their 125th church anniversary at 3 p.m. following their normal Sunday service.

EAGLE LAKE – The Volunteer Fire Departments of Eagle Lake and Garwood teamed up to take on a structure fire on Stevenson Street.

SCHULENBURG – Senior Connections hosted a year end celebration and fundraiser to contribute to their operations and support the seniors that benefit from their programs on Dec. 31. The organization sponsored an auction of donated items as well as a dinner and a dance for those in attendance.

The Citizen takes a look back at 2023

Seniors in high school have a limited time to try to apply for scholarship funds from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for their college courses. The application period that started on Dec. 15 will close on Jan. 31 as seniors across Texas will look to secure the education funding that the Rodeo has pledged for Texas senior students.
