Seniors in high school have a limited time to try to apply for scholarship funds from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for their college courses. The application period that started on Dec. 15 will close on Jan. 31 as seniors across Texas will look to secure the education funding that the Rodeo has pledged for Texas senior students.
Recipients will be notified in May before attending the recipient celebration in June.
There are several requirements for applicants to qualify for the several types of scholarships offered by the Houston Rodeo.
• The student must be a U.S. citizen and a Texas resident.
• The student must be a senior from an eligible high school.
• Applicants must meet the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
• The student should must to attend a not-forprofit university in Texas.
• Applicants must meet the minimum score requirement for either the SAT or ACT.
The minimum score accepted for the SAT and the ACT is a 950 and a 19 respectively.
The Rodeo will be awarding 79 scholarships for the Area Go Texan scholarship award, and 350 scholarships for the Metropolitan areas. These 4-year, $20,000 scholarships are meant to provide opportunities from seniors in smaller communities in the rural areas of Texas. Colorado County is one of over 60 counties that will be considered for the rural area scholarships.
Seniors applying for this scholarship must be in the top third of the graduating class at the completion of their first semester during senior year. An official transcript can confirm class placement.
Any applicant receiving more than $110,000 in funding from FAFSA will not be considered as a recipient for the scholarship.
Area Go Texan Scholarship applications are only available online through the Show’s website, www.rodeohouston.com, under the Educational Support Area.
