The ecumenical St. Nicholas Ministry has helped thousands of needy individuals and families in tri-county area of Colorado, Fayette and Lavaca Counties over its 36-year history. This ministry identifies and assists those who are struggling, like needy children, their families and the elderly by providing gifts such as boxes of food, new toys, blankets/quilts and other items during the Christmas season.

COLUMBUS – Over half of a decade of planning, preparation and construction led to the addition of several upgrades at the Columbus Community Hospital and the surrounding buildings that play part of their operation. On Nov. 20, CCH celebrated their new additions with a dedication that featured a tour, followed by speeches by hospital officials as well as a few state dignitaries.

EAGLE LAKE – This year, the Eagle Lake Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the selection of Bobbe Shapiro Nolan as the Parade Marshal for the Christmas Parade of Lights, taking place Dec. 9 in Eagle Lake.

SHERIDAN – Members of various police enforcement departments combined to serve two warrants involved with a narcotics investigation in Colorado County led by the Westside Narcot ics Task Force on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

COLUMBUS – The local Brookshire Brothers left many reasons for the seniors living at Oak Bluff apartments at 1513 Montezuma St. to be thankful after donating meals to every resident on Nov. 16.

The Colorado County 4-H program met on Nov. 13 with the intent to provide some charitable donations and community service as they celebrated the holiday season with the spirit of giving.

SAN FELIPE – The origins of Texas find its roots in the rural areas around Colorado and Austin Counties that trace back to the Old 300 Settlers commissioned by Stephen F. Austin. Austin’s base of operations during Texas’ colonization was established in San Felipe, a smaller community south of Sealy. On Nov. 11, the town of San Felipe celebrated its 200th birthday with a special presentation at the San Felipe De Austin Museum that included a recreation of life during colonial Texas.

WEIMAR – Meet Sydnie Gaston, the epitome of a true heroine, who comes to life in a way that will captivate audiences young and old in The Spirit of Gonzales, a work of historical fiction and one of five books by local author Betsy Wagner of Columbus.

AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott and the 45th President of the United States Donald J. Trump thanked and served meals to over 240 Texas National Guard soldiers, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, and other service members stationed on the border over Thanksgiving for Operation Lone Star (OLS) in Edinburg on Nov. 19.

EAGLE LAKE, TEXAS Wharton County Junior College’s Adult Education & Literacy Program is resuming free High School Equivalency (HSE/GED) classes in Eagle Lake.

While SAS is on Thanksgiving break, we would like to let everyone know how thankful we are to have so many wonderful folks supporting our school. In addition to our staff and student families, we are grateful for our substitute teachers, and our PTC officers and members, who volunteer all year to ensure events and fundraisers go as planned. We appreciate our school Advisory Council and Fr. James Dvorak for their ongoing guidance. We are blessed to have the generosity of St. Anthony and St. Roch parishes, their Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB HAVE HOLIDAY ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR THANKSGIVING

The Navidad Valley CattleWomen (NVCW) were blessed to receive a donation of Cody Johnson concert tickets last spring from a very generous donor. The proceeds received by auctioning off the tickets have been designated to assist with piloting a collegiate scholarship program.

LA GRANGE, TEXAS – The Green Door Fund for Workforce Development and Education (GDF), a program of the Fayette Community Foundation (FCF), recently hosted its inaugural Career Crusade for La Grange High School students, in collaboration with the La Grange Independent School District.

ROTARY CLUB WELCOMES COUNTY EXTENSION AGENT

The City of Columbus and Columbus Community Industrial Development Corporation (CCIDC) met the matching pledge challenge of an anonymous donor and approved $100,000 in funds for the “Save Our Opera House” capital campaign. Those funds along with the matching $100,000 added $200,000 to the growing campaign monies which are now at $401,569.

WEIMAR – The Nov. 9 City Council meeting saw the introduction of a new police chief, the retirement of a former officer as well as the discussion around the discolored water coming out of faucets at residences and businesses around town.
