COLUMBUS – Environmental Research Group, LLC is conducting research at the Harbert- Wooten Farm as part of a project sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Historians know that William Harbert, his extended family, and over 100 enslaved people moved to Colorado County in 1854 from Tennessee and Mississippi. Descendants of the Harbert family continue to manage the farm today. However, large agricultural businesses are successful because of the contributions of many people. As a work-site, and sometimes as a home, farms become important places to many people.
ERG seeks to identify descendants of people who lived or worked on the Harbert/Wooten Farm in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This first step in the project will answer any questions family members have, ask about their interest in the project, and offer to share with them any information learned about their ancestors. Archaeological research work is planned at the Harbert-Wooten Farm in June and July 2024. ERG will investigate any archaeological discoveries and document the findings in a report on the work in the fall of 2024.
At this time, any information families choose to share with ERG will be used only to consider ongoing historical and archaeological research questions. Descendants are welcome to stay informed about the project and any research documenting their ancestors without sharing any information about their life and work on the farm.
If you have information or would like additional information, please contact ERG at HarbertPlantationProject@ envrg.com or (512) 329-0031.
