BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB HAVE HOLIDAY ARTS AND CRAFTS FOR THANKSGIVING

While SAS is on Thanksgiving break, we would like to let everyone know how thankful we are to have so many wonderful folks supporting our school. In addition to our staff and student families, we are grateful for our substitute teachers, and our PTC officers and members, who volunteer all year to ensure events and fundraisers go as planned. We appreciate our school Advisory Council and Fr. James Dvorak for their ongoing guidance. We are blessed to have the generosity of St. Anthony and St. Roch parishes, their Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters.

Arlen Gene Brune was born to Arno and Alice Mae (Reeder) Brune on July 20, 1944 in La Grange, Texas. He saddled up for his last ride on Nov. 18, 2023 at the age of 79.

Sylvester Truman Parr, age 78, of Weimar, Texas, formerly of Cat Spring, peacefully passed away, leaving a legacy of love and dedication. Born to Claude and Leara Parr, Sylvester spent 26 years as a devoted employee of the San Bernard Electric Cooperative, where his strong work ethic and commitment shone through.

Ewald Joe Schertz, 86, of Frelsburg, Texas, passed away on Nov. 20, 2023 at his home in Frelsburg.

The Columbus Cardinals left their home field, traveled all the way to Madisonville and returned with the Area Championship.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals playoff journey came to an end in the semi-finals of the State Tournament for the third straight year when they were defeated by the Gunter Tigers on Thursday, Nov. 16, in Garland, TX.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals volleyball teams’ season came to an end, but they had several players named to the All-District team.

The Texas House on Friday defeated a proposed voucher plan, also leaving in doubt a comprehensive public school funding plan that became tied to it, The Dallas Morning News reported. A coalition of rural Republicans and Democrats joined together to take education savings accounts out of the bill by an 8463 margin.

Texas ChalleNGe Academy is a twenty-two-week program meant to help youths improve their lives. I heard of this program through my parents and my brother. My brother completed this program last cycle, and I am glad that I followed his lead and attended.

EAGLE LAKE – The Community Center played host to the start of a new tradition as several city officials and workers gathered for the city’s State of the City Address on Nov. 9. Led by Mayor Tim Kelley and featuring a dinner provided by Austin’s Barbeque and Catering, those in attendance reminisced on some of the positive initiatives throughout the past year as they plan to make the address an annual occurrence.

WILD ART EAGLE LAKE HONORS VETS WITH PARK DEDICATION

WEIMAR – The Nov. 9 City Council meeting saw the introduction of a new police chief, the retirement of a former officer as well as the discussion around the discolored water coming out of faucets at residences and businesses around town.

The City of Columbus and Columbus Community Industrial Development Corporation (CCIDC) met the matching pledge challenge of an anonymous donor and approved $100,000 in funds for the “Save Our Opera House” capital campaign. Those funds along with the matching $100,000 added $200,000 to the growing campaign monies which are now at $401,569.

COLUMBUS – The A Better Columbus organization has its sights set on several beautification efforts around the city after discussing their next steps at the Nov. 8 meeting. Several of those steps include acquiring funds for the program and adding artistic displays around the town.
