The Columbus Cardinals dropped back-to-back games last week and put themselves in a predicament for playoffs.

After handing the Rice Raiders their first district loss, the Cardinals were flying high and looking like they were about to go on a little run down the stretch. Now they find themselves on the outside looking in.

The Cardinals lost to Yoakum and industrial this past week and now must most the games remaining on their schedule if they are going to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Riding high from the overtime victory over Rice the Cardinals strolled into Yoakum to take on the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs also pushed Rice to their limit but came up short in overtime, so they came in with a chip on their shoulder.

They were on home court for the second game in a row and took full advantage of that fact. Yoakum’s athleticism is comparable to Rice’s, and it was on full display in the game against the Cardinals.

Yoakum did what Rice could not do against the Cardinals and that was slow down their offense. The Cardinals offense is hard to stop once there is blood in the water and Yoakum made sure all wounds were patched up before heading into battle.

The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter and got the fans into the game, only allowing three points from the Cardinals and from that point on the Bulldogs had full control. The loss evened the Cardinals district record up at 4-4 which is not completely detrimental because they were still in 4th place which is a playoff spot.

The Cardinals knew they had to reset and get ready for Industrial who was waiting for them at the end of the week.

It was another road game on Friday, Jan. 30, for the Cardinals and they took on a team that is in a similar position as the Cardinals.

Industrial is currently 6th in the district standings and is looking to make a final push down this last stretch of games to sneak into playoffs. They got started on the right foot by beating the Cardinals 58-56 in overtime.

The loss did not make any changes to the standings, but it left a crack in the door for Industrial to jump the Cardinals if they do not find a win soon.

The Cardinals’ next game is their biggest of the year. They are taking on Hallettsville who is right above them in that fourth spot and need to take that from them if they want to make playoffs.

They are scheduled to play on Tuesday, Jan. 30, where the Cardinals will be hungry for a win and a win that could help them move up int he standings.
