COLUMBUS – The Columbus Community Hospital is offering an opportunity for residents to take care of their heart health during American Heart Month by providing free screenings for cholesterol and A1C at the Wellness Center from Feb. 13 to Feb. 15.

Chamber of Commerce holds membership meeting

COLUMBUS – The long-awaited move for the Colorado County Elections Office has finally been completed after the department set up shop at 1117 Travis St., a former Justice of the Peace Office.

COLUMBUS – The Texas Right to Life organization gathered residents of Colorado County who share their values for a protest march on Jan. 27 through the streets of downtown and finished their rally with several keynote speakers outside of the county courthouse.

ROCK ISLAND – The Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program awarded Rock Island Volunteer Fire Department with a $20,000 grant to assist in the purchase of new fire and rescue equipment.

COLUMBUS – The Magnolia Belles have been a tradition in Columbus for generations as the high school–aged girls in town are taught and display the class often associated with the Belles. The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust will be holding the Magnolia Belle Orientation Session on Saturday, Feb. 3 to introduce any high school female student to this important community tradition.

ALLEYTON – The Texas Historical Commission has recognized Alley Cemetery as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors Alley Cemetery as an important and educational part of local history.

February is the National Library Lover’s Month for the library. Show the library how much you love it just by stopping in for a visit.

LA GRANGE – Wednesday morning’s flooding on Jan. 24 did not deter the members of the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild from attending the “Improv” Workshop with Michelle Lavender. Michelle is from HollyDee Quilts in Luling, Tx. She showed the many ways to transform scraps into quilts, using a “Wonky” cut and an open mind. Her unique way of cutting and piecing was intriguing to each of the members present.

The Jan. 25 meeting of the Eagle Lake Noon Lions featured Club Secretary Charles Abel recognizing the volunteers who give their time and talents to serve the community at the two Eagle Lake Ministerial Alliance Food Pantries.

SCHULENBURG – The Stanzel Family Foundation continues its commitment to fostering community well-being by providing support to the Colorado County Habitat for Humanity. The grant will specifically aid the organization’s critical home repair program in Weimar, addressing the urgent needs of individuals and families in the community.

Daughters of the Republic of Texas local chapter president, Kathleen Townzen, found a colorful resource map of Texas, depicting historical, geologic and cultural aspects throughout the state. She purchased several to donate to local libraries.
