COLUMBUS — The Magnolia Belles have been a tradition in Columbus for generations as the high school–aged girls in town are taught and display the class often associated with the Belles. The Columbus Historical Preservation Trust will be holding the Magnolia Belle Orientation Session on Saturday, Feb. 3 to introduce any high school female student to this important community tradition.
Since 1964, CHPT has presented a group of graduating seniors as the Magnolia Belles, reflecting the years of history by continuing the tradition. However, the orientation event is required for anyone hoping to become a Belle, and interested students must attend an orientation during their high school career before the Belles of their graduating class are chosen.
The orientation will be hosted at the Stafford Opera House at 9:30 a.m. for those students looking to gain some more information on what it means to be a Magnolia Belle.
2024 will mark the 60th group of Magnolia Belles that CHPT has introduced to the town during the Magnolia Days Festival, an event unique to Columbus that highlights the history of the town and the accomplishments of the people who have lived in it since its inception. Historic home tours, live music and games are just a few of the several activities one can participate in at the Magnolia Days celebration.
The Belles are just as much a part of the celebration as they are the history of the festival and Columbus itself. Last year, several Magnolia Belles of the past joined with the presiding Belles for a merging of the past and the present. A new group of Magnolia Belles will represent Columbus as CHPT looks to maintain the tradition as a permanent part of Columbus’ future. There are also scholarships available for students selected to uphold the Magnolia Belles’ tradition.
