Celebrating Correctional Officers Week

On May 5, 1984, President Ronald Regan signed a proclamation dedicating the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week. This year, Correctional Officers Week is May 7-13. The intent of this week is to honor the men and women who have and still do serve the unseen, undiscussed, and often forgotten about segment of law enforcement by choosing to work in county jails, state facilities, and federal penitentiaries across the United States.

Ladycats pick up double shutout against La Villa

The Weimar Ladycats have had nearly a perfect start to their postseason as they have dominated each of their first two opponents to begin what they hope will be a deep playoff run. Through four postseason games, the Ladycats have allowed just one run combined while scoring double digits in every game so far. Their lone concession came in the first round against Falls City, so this time around, Weimar made sure to keep their sheet clean as they won twostraight shutout games against the La Villa Lady Cardinals for the Area Championship. They start the regional portion of the playoffs with a series against a familiar foe, the Schulenburg Lady Horns at Rice High School. Game one begins on Thursday, May 11 at 6 pm.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Early detection saves lives

NEW YORK – Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world, but there is good news: It’s also the cancer you can see on your body. By learning to recognize the warning signs of the disease, you can identify suspicious spots before they become dangerous. Most skin cancers are highly treatable when diagnosed at an early stage, but if left to grow, they can become disfiguring or even deadly. This is why the early detection of skin cancer is so important – it can save your life or the life of a loved one.
