St. Anthony, Columbus Elementary schools to bury time capsule May 11

COLUMBUS – The fifth-grade classes of Columbus Elementary School and St. Anthony Catholic School will bury a time capsule on Thursday, May 11 on the Courthouse Square at 2 p.m.

COLUMBUS – The fifth-grade classes of Columbus Elementary School and St. Anthony Catholic School will bury a time capsule on Thursday, May 11 on the Courthouse Square at 2 p.m.

The time capsule will be buried in the same location as the 1973 time capsule on the Courthouse lawn and be unearthed in 2073 for Columbus’ 250th Birthday.

The fifth-grade classes from both schools were in attendance at the 1973 time capsule opening on Jan. 13 to celebrate 200 years for Columbus.

Items to be buried in the time capsule on Thursday are currently on display at Columbus First State Bank. Some of the items include a Habitat for Humanity birdhouse, Columbus Bicentennial items, a recipe book, T-shirt, and more.

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce said the marker for this upcoming time capsule burial was donated by Henneke Funeral Home.

The Chamber is working with the city on digging a hole to bury the time capsule. The Chamber said the city suggested burying the time capsule 3 feet deep compared to 10 feet, which was the depth used previously for the 1973 time capsule. This could help with finding the time capsule and digging it out quicker. Locals may recall that it took at least an hour for the city to find and pull the 1973 time capsule out of the ground, leading many to wonder if it was buried in a different place from where the city was digging.

Due to the weather forecasting rain this week, the Chamber said they are monitoring the weather and will reschedule the time capsule burial if needed.
