WEIMAR – The Shropshire- Upton chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy held a Confederate Memorial Day Service at the historic Osage Community Cemetery on April 13.
The chapter said nineteen members and guests were in attendance. The ceremony included a bell toll and moment of silence for each of the nine Confederate veterans who are at rest in the cemetery. Each veteran’s name was read aloud along with their service details.
The guest speaker and vice president of the Texas division spoke of her ancestors who are buried at the cemetery and who are also pioneers of the area. The local chapter president spoke about Ferd E. Caldwell who served with the Texas Cavalry.
Flowers were placed at the graves of the soldiers and a memorial wreath was placed on the cemetery gate. Refreshments were enjoyed under the shade of a beautiful oak tree.
According to a release, UDC chapters across the country have held memorial services during the month of April for more than 125 years to fulfill their purposes of historical, benevolent, educational, memorial and patriotic activities.
