Ladycats pick up double shutout against La Villa

The Weimar Ladycats have had nearly a perfect start to their postseason as they have dominated each of their first two opponents to begin what they hope will be a deep playoff run. Through four postseason games, the Ladycats have allowed just one run combined while scoring double digits in every game so far. Their lone concession came in the first round against Falls City, so this time around, Weimar made sure to keep their sheet clean as they won twostraight shutout games against the La Villa Lady Cardinals for the Area Championship. They start the regional portion of the playoffs with a series against a familiar foe, the Schulenburg Lady Horns at Rice High School. Game one begins on Thursday, May 11 at 6 pm.

Game 1, W, 16-0

The Ladycats never let the Lady Cards get settled in game one as Weimar opened the game on fire and never cooled off for the duration of the game. They came out with a 4-run first inning and doubled their total in the second to push their lead to eight. Weimar added three more runs in the third to cross into double digits, and after a scoreless fourth inning, added five more runs in the fifth inning to officially finish the game with a mercy- rule victory.

Offensively, the Ladycats had their way with La Villa’s pitching. Weimar racked up 14 hits in the game, many of them for multiple bases. Kylie Helmcamp and Taylor Smith had huge swings of the bat as their triples were the biggest hits of the game. Helmcamp and an incredible game at the plate as she picked up hits on all four of her attempts and batted in a team-high five runners for scores. Several other players picked up multiple RBIs as well as Hannah Fisbeck batted in three runs, and Reagan Wick, Taylor Smith and Kaelyn Williams batted in two apiece.

Wick’s performance on the mound aided the Ladycats in completing the shutout as she pitched all five innings and came away with 13 strikeouts and no walks.

Game 2, W, 14-0

The second game was like the first in that the Ladycats did not need long to claim a decisive advantage over their opponents. The main difference was that they got an even hotter start at the plate and forced an earlier mercy-rule finish after playing just four innings. They did most of their damage in the first two innings, scoring five runs in the opening inning before scoring eight runs in the second to create an imposing lead. Weimar added an extra run in the third to reach their final score and put the game away.

The Ladycats once again allowed their offense to carry their efforts as they picked up another double- digit hitting performance with 12. Hannah Fisbeck, Kaelyn Williams, Kylie Helmcamp and Paige Pavlu all led the team with two hits each. Pavlu also picked up three RBIs to share the team lead with Izzy Reeves in that category. Reeves secured all her RBIs with a single swing, clearing the bases with a three-run triple.

Taylor Smith took the mound in this game and turned in a quality effort with nine strikeouts and allowing just a single hit.
