Weimar athletes receive awards at athletics banquet

The sports programs of Weimar recognized several of their standout athletes on Sunday, May 7 as part of the festivities at the Weimar Athletics Banquet. Players in several sports received spotlights as the school gave out awards and recognition for their students’ achievements throughout the past school year. Baseball, softball and golf awards could not be given out as those seasons were still in progress by the time of the banquet.

The sports programs of Weimar recognized several of their standout athletes on Sunday, May 7 as part of the festivities at the Weimar Athletics Banquet. Players in several sports received spotlights as the school gave out awards and recognition for their students’ achievements throughout the past school year. Baseball, softball and golf awards could not be given out as those seasons were still in progress by the time of the banquet.

Weimar handed out awards for each individual sports team on campus, but there were a few awards that spanned the entire athletic year. The Weimar High School Athlete of the Year award was given to players that displayed excellence throughout several sports this school year. This year, the award went to Brady Henke for the boys and Paige Pavlu for the girls. Weimar also gave out the overall Fighting Heart award to Kim Hinze and Chris Moreno for their attitudes throughout the athletic seasons this year.

The football team chose both an offensive and a defensive MVP for exceptional contributions on either side of the ball. Wyatt Lacina received Weimar’s Offensive MVP award while the Defensive MVP went to Dillon Stech as both players made huge impacts on the field for the Wildcats. Kaden Zinnante won the award for most-improved player, and Chris Moreno won Weimar’s Fighting Heart award for his spirit.

The Ladycat volleyball team decided on an overall MVP from the season as well as a most-improved player and the Fighting Heart recipient. Paige Pavlu received the MVP after having a strong season and helping lead the Ladycats to the postseason. Janiyah Cooper won most improved after making strides throughout her freshman season. Taylor Smith was awarded the Fighting Heart award.

Both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams gave individual awards to some of their top players as well. Paige Pavlu once again claimed the MVP for the Ladycats after a great season, and her sister Claire received the most improved award for the team. Weimar awarded Neorri Johnson and Izzy Reeves the Fighting Heart award in basketball. The boys MVP award went to Brady Henke who was the team’s leading scorer this past season. Jerron Fischer earned the most improved award while Marcus Castillo was the Fighting Heart recipient.

The boys’ powerlifting team selected Dakota Ford and Ethan Stech as their co-MVPs and gave Brendon Brandt the honor of the most-improved lifter. Ashley Treece claimed the MVP for the girls and Zowie Lee received the most-improved award.

For tennis, the MVPs were Dakota Ford for the boys and Abigail Hilley for the girls. The girls had three recipients for the most-improved player award as Claire Pavlu, Delaney Turlington and Da’Dreanna Granger shared the honor. Lance Tolbert was the lone recipient of the award for the boys.

The girls’ track team awarded the MVP award to Olivia Cabrerra and gave the most improved award to Brooke Ohnheiser. The boys MVP was split amongst the 4 X 200m relay team that made it to the regional meet. Brady Henke, JaBraelin Thomas, Huxton Kloesel and Jayden Langenburg all shared their piece in claiming the award. Dakota Ford received the most-improved award for the Wildcats.

The cross-country team chose an MVP from both the girls’ and the boys’ squads after their season last Fall. Brooke Ohnheiser received the honor for the girls and Dakota Ford accepted the award for the boys. Both teams also awarded the most improved recognition for one athlete on each team. The girls’ most improved runner award went to Alazay Moreno for her progress throughout last season. The boys gave Troy Cantwell the most improved award for his work as well.

Other Wildcats who received special honors were Landon Holt, Eli Adams, Sullivan Divin, Jace Weishuhn, Jonah Guerrero, Wesley Morgan, Josser Amaya, Devaun Duffy, Johan Camacho and Lavar Johnson.
