Hello, my fellow Colorado County residents! My name is Shayla Kuykendall, and I am proud to be a part of the Colorado County Citizen family. I grew up in Eagle Lake and even shared human-interest stories featuring some of my fellow citizens on my blog, Intellectual Beats. Since returning to my hometown this past September, the decision to become a reporter for the Citizen has felt like a call to service.

The City of Eagle Lake met on Jan. 10 to discuss updating its junked vehicle ordinance policy. The current definition includes expired license plates. The city is working more on defining what is considered a “junk” vehicle.

The City of Columbus met on Jan. 9 and heard concerns from residents about reports of flooding on Fairview Street which intersects with Highway 90. City Manager Donald Warschak advised council that the reasoning for this could be due to water not flowing in the correct direction. The city said it will reach out to TxDOT concerning this issue. Warschak said that Tx-DOT will have a ditch cleaning project near the highway along FM 806 (Cardinal Lane).

COLUMBUS –The Colorado County commissioners met on Jan. 9. At the meeting, Michael Furrh, EMS Director, went before the commissioner court to discuss potential construction being done at EMS Station No. 3 at Eagle Lake. The station is currently located near the Colorado County Opportunity Center. Furrh asked for approval to seek proposal from contractors. Precinct 4 Commissioner Darrell Gertson pointed out that the current station is a key area due to accessibility in the event of accidents or other incidents that may occur where it is located. The court approved.

COLUMBUS – The public is invited to a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Harrell Dentistry at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20 hosted by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

COLUMBUS – Students from Columbus ISD, who submitted art to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, currently have their artwork on display at the Live Oak Art Center, 1014 Milam St., until Feb. 1.

SCHULENBERG – The Turtle Wing Foundation’s annual Toast returns on Jan. 26 at Sengelmann Hall, 531 N. Main St.

LA GRANGE – Diane Rose will be a guest presenter at the Colorado Valley Quilt Guild, 653 E. Pearl St., on Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.

VICTORIA – The public is invited to attend the annual Equipping the Saints event on Saturday, Feb. 4 hosted by Trinity Lutheran Church, 106 N. DeLeon St.

COLUMBUS – The Colorado County Historical Commission made history Jan. 11 with the swearing in of nearly 30 new members.
