In the Feb. 1 edition of the Citizen, there is an error in the cutline of one of the front-page photos. The person in the top right photo is incorrectly identified as Lydia Benjamin. The correct name is Avey Dyer who was awarded Special Merits for her rodeo art submission.

February is Black History Month, and The Citizen wants to highlight untold stories of local Black History makers and influential members of the community. Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency announced an informal investigation is underway in Texas regarding water quality violations in the state.

Valentine sends cards all over the country Leave it to Texas to have its own Valentine. It’s the busiest week of the year in this small town of Valentine in Jeff Davis County. Back near 1882, when a railroad crew of the Southern Pacific Railroad finished laying tracks from Van Horn east on Feb. 14, it is said that they decided to name the spot “Valentine, Texas.” It’s located on highway 90 and remains small with under 200 people.

EAGLE LAKE – The Eagle Lake Noon Lions Club is providing free vision screening services to schools and parents in the community through two of its members, Jeff Cunkelman and Bob Lapham.

SCHULENBURG –The Turtle Wing Foundation’s 12th annual Toast was a success.

Rice CISD leaders were among the presenters at the TASA Mid-Winter Conference, Jan. 29-Feb. 1, in Austin. Superintendent Bill Hefner, Assistant Superintendent Melody Grigar and education consultant Matt Pope, CEO of EdPact, led a presentation titled “Rice CISD: Implementing Learning Systems in a Rural District.”

AUSTIN – Too many parents are living their worst fear: losing a child. These parents have lost teenagers in vehicle crashes in which they weren’t wearing their seat belt.

COLUMBUS – The members of St. Paul United Methodist Church, 916 Fannin St., invites the public to attend a celebration of 157 years of worship.

A ground blessing was held on Saturday, Feb. 4 at noon for the Colorado County Habitat for Humanity’s 29th house.
