WHARTON – Registration will soon open for Wharton County Junior College’s May Mini-Term, Summer 2023 and Fall 2023 semesters.

EASTER EGG HUNT AT COLUMBUS OAKS ASSISTED LIVING

Congregations of the Tri-County Cooperative Ministries, ELCA will observe Holy Week and the Easter Celebration will soon be here. Palm Sunday will have us remembering that day when Jesus enters Jerusalem with the waving of palm branches and hearing shouts by the crowds “Hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” We will gather for Maundy Thursday services, celebrating the Sacrament and remembering that night when Jesus gathered with His disciples and instituting the Lord’s Supper. And then Good Friday, when people of faith recall the great suffering Jesus endured and the death that came on the cross. And our Jesus goes to that cross for our salvation. He gives His all out of His love for all of us.

The Live Oak Art Center hosted its first Songwriter Series Fundraiser Concert with Darrel Appelt featuring Phillip Brummett on March 30. The evening included a social hour and concert. Attendees were able to enjoy musical selections from Appelt and hear stories behind his songs such as “Blue Eyed Girl,” inspired from meeting his wife in San Marcos, “My Baby Likes My Texas” and more. The proceeds from the night went towards the art center.

Community members from near and far came to the library on March 30 to attend a forensic anthropology presentation by Amanda Danning at Nesbitt Memorial Library. Danning discussed the bestselling book, “No Bone Overturned” by Jeff Benedict. The book is based on the true story of Dr. Doug Owsley, a forensic anthropologist at the Smithsonian, and one of his greatest accomplishments when he sued the U.S. Department of Justice to stop them from reburying a 9,000-year-old skeleton called the “Kennewick Man.” Danning talked about evaluating “Kennewick Man” and how she, with some assistance, developed a program that used grids to help with facial reconstruction.

NADA – On March 25, the Texas ChalleNGe Academy in Eagle Lake held a family day for Cadets who joined the January 2023 class. This day is special because it is the first time families have seen their teen since they entered the program in January.

Those considering voting in this upcoming election are being reminded by the Colorado County Elections Office to register by April 6.

COLUMBUS – The Columbus High School One Act Play advanced to Area after competing at the Bi-District contest in Edna last Thursday.

BRENHAM – Keeping a hive of bees can be an educational family activity as well as providing honey for your table and pollination for your garden and flowering plants. Most city ordinances allow up to two bee hives per city lot.

The public is invited to join history enthusiasts at Nesbitt Memorial Library, 529 Washington St., to learn about a new book highlighting German immigration to the Columbus area.

The Turkey and Dressing Meal for Columbus Troop 312, sponsored by the Columbus Noon Lions Club, is rescheduled for Sunday, April 16.
