LA GRANGE — Every October, cooperatives across the nation come together to celebrate National Coop Month, raising awareness of the cooperative business model—a trusted, community-driven approach that builds strong, resilient communities.

Cooperatives provide essential services in industries such as agriculture, utilities, and finance, playing a vital role in enriching consumers’ lives across the country. Beyond offering expanded choices to consumers, cooperatives boost the economic vitality of rural communities by improving infrastructure, supporting education, and creating jobs.

Fayette Electric Cooperative (FEC) and Colorado Valley Communications are prime examples of cooperatives that embody this mission, continuously serving and uplifting their communities. National Co-op Month is the perfect time for these two organizations to unite in efforts that drive local progress through the leadership of their employees and board members.

Just as the power lines and telephone lines connect homes and businesses in their service areas, the values of community and responsibility run through every decision FEC and Colorado Valley Communications make. In celebration of these shared values, the cooperatives hosted their 7th Annual Document Shred Day on Friday, Oct. 4.

“We greatly appreciate the strong relationship with we have with FEC and like FEC, we strive to improve the quality of life in the areas we serve,” said Colorado Valley Communications General Manager, Kelly Allison.

FEC General Manager Doug Lambert said, “National Co-op Month celebrates the unique impact cooperatives like Fayette Electric have on our communities. Our commitment to member service and community values is reflected in events like Co-op Customer Shred Day, where we support the security and connection of our members. Partnering with Colorado Valley Communications underscores two of our guiding cooperative principles: Cooperation Among Cooperatives and Concern for Community.”

The event provided cooperative members with a secure, convenient way to dispose of sensitive documents, helping to safeguard them from identity theft. Many members took advantage of the free shredding services at both locations. Those who brought more than three boxes made generous donations, with $500 being donated to both the Children’s Advocacy Center and Senior Connections.
