The Rice Lady Raiders struggles continue for the young team after losing two more games this past week.

COLUMBUS – Columbus Community Hospital welcomed the first newborn of 2024 when Theo Vavrusa was born Jan. 2 to Dana Benz and Trey Vavrusa of Hallettsville. Dr. Eslam Elhammady and the labor and delivery nurses at CCH delivered the 8.3 lbs. baby boy.

COLUMBUS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS FOR MIXER

WEIMAR – The City Council’s first regular meeting of the new year saw a decision being made on the position of Fire Marshal after the previous Marshal, Mc-Caul Ulrich, resigned due to a potential breach in nepotism code. The city accepted recommendations before holding a vote in open session and deciding on the position.

‘Chapel Church’ feels no ways tired after 125 years

COLUMBUS – Colorado County U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency Executive Director Dawn Hoffmann reminds livestock producers who suffered grazing losses that occurred throughout 2023 due to drought to report their losses timely and to enroll in the Livestock Forage Disaster Program by Jan. 30.

HOUSTON – The number of pets living on the streets in our region is believed by many to be at an all-time high. With the Gulf Coast Region preparing for back-to-back weather systems that will drop temperatures to dangerous levels, residents are urged to help homeless or loose pets.

On Jan. 10, the Columbus Walmart notified the Columbus Food Pantry of a donation of 126 cases of frozen Cornish Game Hens. That equals 3,024 hens. The Food Pantry has a good deal of freezer space, but it is not able to handle 3,024 hens. Coordination efforts got underway immediately. Several volunteers, churches, and businesses came to the rescue of the hens. The hens are currently all over the City of Columbus, and safely waiting to be handed to families in need of The Columbus Food Pantry services. It was an impressive effort.

The Weimar Independent School District was recently awarded $6,000 from the Weimar Methodist Foundation.

FLAG OF THE MONTH CHOSEN BY SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The Friends of the Nesbitt Library are hosting a program presented by Dr. Gerri Hanten on Thursday, Jan. 25 at the Nesbitt Memorial Library for those who would like to become more creative in 2024. The program begins at 2 p.m.

Columbus High School alumni are making great strides in their college careers, one of which being a 2022 graduate.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals spent their Friday night on the road in Palacios and slid back home before the cold and icy weather with a victory in tow.

The Columbus Cardinals continue to roll in their district schedule after defeating the Palacios Sharks on the road on Friday, Jan. 12.

The Columbus Cardinals have hit the ground running this soccer season, picking up a tournament championship hosted by the Rice Raiders.

The Columbus Lady Cards traveled to Altair to play in Rice’s host soccer tournament but unfortunately never really found their footing.

The Rice Lady Raiders hosted a tournament in Altair over this past weekend and ended up claiming second place.

The Weimar Wildcats added two more wins to their win streak to extend it to four games.
