New Fire Marshal, proclamation from City Council

WEIMAR — The City Council’s first regular meeting of the new year saw a decision being made on the position of Fire Marshal after the previous Marshal, McCaul Ulrich, resigned due to a potential breach in nepotism code. The city accepted recommendations before holding a vote in open session and deciding on the position.

Fire Chief David Brandt gave his recommendation for Russ McAfee following his annual report for WVFD. Brandt read from McAfee’s resume, describing his work habits as a firefighter for over 30 years. Brandt cited his commitment to safety as well as prompt decision making. According to Brandt, McAfee requested his certification courses be funded by the city and a laptop for use for his duties.

Prior to the council deciding on a new Fire Marshal, they discussed the legitimacy around the resignation of the Marshal before Ulrich, Jonathon Perales. Questions arose as Perales did not give his resignation in open session at a council meeting, but according to attorney Carl Dawson, the city accepted his resignation by searching for and appointing new Marshals.

Councilmember Kevin Janecka proposed to allow Perales to finish his initial term, however, Kurt Scardino introduced a motion to appoint McAfee. The opinion was split amongst the Council during discussion, but all but one council member voted in favor of the McAfee appointment. Janecka was the dissenting opinion in the matter. The motion carried, hiring Russ McAfee to the position.

In other news, the city confirmed the general city election for Saturday, May 4 as well as confirmed the Elections Services Contract with the county to allow county election workers to run the polls.

Mayor Mi lton Kol ler read a proclamation declaring the week of Jan. 21 as School Choice Week in Weimar. The nationally recognized week in the last week of January was founded to promote awareness in alternative school options such as homeschool ing, charter schools and private schools.
