COLUMBUS – Early voting is in full swing in Colorado County as the first wave of polling for the March 5 primaries comes close to an end. However, the newly refurbished Elections Center at 1117 Travis St. had to deal with some unfortunate circumstances on Tuesday, Feb. 20 as a poll worker relieved themselves from their duties after witnesses reported the worker discussing a local resident in a negative light.

County OKs agreements, recognizes significant month

COLUMBUS – The Feb. 26 City Council meeting saw the Council move on a variety of actions including confirming the terms of three councilmembers who will be uncontested during the May Municipal elections and a recognition for the library after achieving a major milestone.

In recognition of Black History Month, the League of Women Voters of South-Central Texas will host a special Zoom presentation, Cotton and Sugar in Texas: 1800-2024, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28.

Betty Calhoun Gills, 91, of Columbus, Texas, passed away on Feb. 25, 2024 in Columbus, Texas.

Gladys (Halfmann) Stolle, 94, passed away with her family by her side on Feb. 24, 2024 in Sealy, Texas.

Texas A&M Forest Service is awarding $8.25 million through the Texas Climate-Smart Initiative, a financial incentives program to fund non-industrial, private, small-acreage landowners. The five-year project, led by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and funded by the USDA’s Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities grant, will provide financial incentives to agricultural commodities across Texas.

Brenda Boehm has been chosen the Garden Angel for Columbus Garden Club 2023-24.

COLUMBUS – A Better Columbus discussed several ways to help improve the community with beautification efforts and community impact initiatives. At their Feb. 21 meeting, the ABC organization resolved to continue their campaign to get businesses to purchase and display flowers as they look to raise funds for future murals in town.

COLUMBUS – As Black History Month comes to an end, churches, organizations and nonprofits in Colorado County have been celebrating in different ways. The First Church of the Nazarene hosted their iteration of Black History Month Celebrations with a program that featured poetry and music as they highlighted the arts created by African Americans.

Hermann Sons Life insurance agent Mary K. Seifert of Weimar was recognized as a top-selling agent for her sales production in 2023. Seifert earned membership of the Executive Club and was awarded a monetary bonus.

RHS SENIORS VISIT JUNIOR COLLEGE

An invitation is extended to the community to attend the Ribbon Cutting for Mraz Quality Golf Carts on Friday, March 1, at 11 a.m.

COLUMBUS – The Office of Emergency management will begin seeking feedback during the public opinion phase of the Hazard Mitigation Plan construction period. After seeking called in and written responses from county residents, the OEM will host a public meeting for residents to learn more about the current plan and to provide feedback.

Columbus High School will soon play host to a local Black History Banquet to celebrate African Americans and their contributions to the arts and the country. The event is scheduled for March 2 at the Columbus High School cafeteria at 7 p.m.

The Weimar Library is preparing to recognize “Reading Month” for the month of March. The celebration provides even more of a great reason to march into a local library and find a great book to read.

Texas A&M School of Public Health recently held its annual Career and Practicum Fair allowing Master and Doctoral Students to meet with a variety of city, county and non-profit agencies who may have available internship positions.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals picked up a huge win to start the season defeating the defending State Champions.

The Columbus Lady Cardinals are heading back to the State Tournament after defeating Lytle, London and Aranas Pass this past week.
