The Columbus Lady Cardinals picked up a huge win to start the season defeating the defending State Champions.

The Lady Cards beat the Weimar Ladycats 5-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Weimar.

The game started as expected with both teams feeling each other out seeing what works and what doesn’t and settling into the game. Mia Post did an excellent job keeping things steady for her team during the first couple of innings pitching a masterful game.

Post’s stellar pitching coupled with the defense behind her having little to no holes for the Ladycats allowed for the Lady Cards to get their bats going at their own speed. Post threw 108 pitches and 61 of them were strikes which comes out to about 56% of her pitches were strikes.

For the Lady Cards to get that type of production from their pitcher it made it a little bit easier to be confident when they were in the batter’s box. The Lady Cards knew Post was having an excellent game and because of that offensively they were able to take some chances and it worked out for them.

Once the Lady Cards got their bats going there was no looking back for them. The Lady Cards recorded five hits in the contest, but they were momentum shifting hits. Taylor Morrow connected with a ball that was driven into the shallow outfield and it was an easy toss and catch to get her out at first but she was able to move some runners.

Morrow’s hit ended with her being called out at first, but she was able to drive home one of her teammates and pushed two more into scoring position. This is what started the rally for the Lady Cards and established a comfortable 5-2 lead.

From that point on Post dominated the game allowing only four hits, two runs and one error. Post also recorded seven strikeouts in seven innings while only walking three batters for the entire game.

The Ladycats had no answers for the Lady Cards defense and pitching and had the defending champions walking away from the game with a loss.

The Lady Cards look ahead to their game against Shadow Creek on Friday, Mar. 1, on their home field looking to build off the momentum of this win.
