COLUMBUS — The Colorado County Courthouse once again housed the Commissioners Court as they discussed several different actions at the Feb. 26 meeting. The Commissioners made movements on various actions including creating an agreement between Colorado County and Wharton County Junior College and recognizing April as a significant month in the county.
The Colorado County Emergency Medical Service Corp led by Chief Michael Furrh approached the Commissioners with a proposal to create an affiliation agreement between the County EMS and the EMS program at the Wharton County Junior College. By sharing resources, knowledge and training, prospective students will be able to benefit from the partnership and potentially find opportunities with the county.
The Courthouse will also host a public hearing on potentially establishing a 40 mph speed limit on CR 105 on March 11 at 9 a.m. The road is located in Precinct 1 around Rock Island and Garwood. The potential change will change the speed limit on the road’s entirety.
The Commissioners also came to an agreement to authorize a contract with US Foods to provide food and supplies for the Colorado County Jail. U.S. Foods is a publicly traded food distributor and supplier that provides service to several schools, jails and other entities throughout the U.S. According to the U.S. Foods website, the company covers over 300,00 customers with over 350,000 products and programs to select from.
April will be recognized as Autism Awareness Month in Colorado County after the Commissioners moved to accept the proclamation. This month is set aside nationally to increase awareness of those struggling with autism and the resources they have available. During the month, health organizations promote early detection as well as acceptance by society. The CDC and other entities openly invite the public to educate themselves on the circumstances surrounding autism and the struggles those on the spectrum face. The Commissioners will reconvene on March 11 for another regularly scheduled meeting.
