Lady Raiders drop tourney games

The Rice Lady Raiders competed in a tournament during the last week of 2022. Stats and results for some of the games were not available by the time of press deadline. However, the results that were available reflected some major struggles for Rice. They took a 46-34 loss to Karnes City early in the tourney, and then later took a huge 54-14 loss to Nixon-Smiley the next day.

Raiders led by All-tournament selections

The Raiders spent some time during the winter break to take on the Nixon-Smiley varsity tournament. Rice had some strong performances during the tourney, especially on the offensive end. In their wins, the Raiders offense was effective and potent. Led by All-Tournament selections Jalen Porch and Dyren Johnson, the Raiders reached the thirdplace game against Navarro in which they were defeated and claimed fourth place at the tournament.

Wildcats swept at Giddings-hosted tournament

The Weimar varsity basketball team traveled to Giddings during the winter break to take part in their mid-week varsity tournament. They had a stretch of tough outings in these games as they failed to pick up a single win against their opponents. The Wildcats ran into some defensive struggles in the first day of competition before encountering some issues on the other side of the ball on the second day of the tournament.

Ladycats split games as tournament hosts

The Weimar Ladycats’ varsity basketball team hosted a winter break tournament in the middle of the week. Weimar had a few strong games during the tournament and picked up some big victories. They also had some tougher games where they found a much lower level of success on both ends. The Ladycats finished the Weimar tournament 2-2 after averaging 40 points per game.

1973 time capsule to be opened in January

(Columbus) According to an excerpt taken from the minutes of Commissioner’s Court, Colorado County, Texas, regular meeting on February 12, 1973, a group of sixth-grade students at Columbus Elementary School students, along with their teacher Mrs. Peggy Justice, appeared before the Commissioner’s Court of Colorado County and made the following presentation to the court: Bobby Estrada – “The reading classes at Columbus Elementary School are asking your permission to bury a “Time Capsule” here on the Courthouse lawn. We would like for it to belong to the elementary school children of the year 2023 and that it be unearthed when Columbus celebrates 200 years.”

Annual toy drive delivers warmth in the winter

A small crew of about six adults and a few children were working on making the final touches to their set up for the Soup for Souls annual toy drive when the winds kicked in and the temperature began to drop rapidly. While the wind and cold weather may have stopped some families from making the trip to the host house near Glidden Baptist Church, Edward Pavlicek and the rest of the donors and volunteers fought through the elements to hand out and deliver soup and presents to the families in Columbus.
