Columbus track Area Meet results in regional qualifiers

SEGUIN – The Columbus boys’ and girls’ track teams came into the Area Championship Meet after a strong overall performance in the district meet that qualified several athletes to compete at the next level. Despite some more solid performances at Area, Columbus had a limited number of competitors reach the next level to compete in the Regional Championship Meet. Columbus had several near misses as several Cardinal athletes fell just outside of a top four spot that would allow them to qualify for the next level.

SEGUIN – The Columbus boys’ and girls’ track teams came into the Area Championship Meet after a strong overall performance in the district meet that qualified several athletes to compete at the next level. Despite some more solid performances at Area, Columbus had a limited number of competitors reach the next level to compete in the Regional Championship Meet. Columbus had several near misses as several Cardinal athletes fell just outside of a top four spot that would allow them to qualify for the next level.

The Lady Cards had a few athletes qualify for Regionals after strong outings. Taylor Morrow was one of the first to secure her spot in the regional meet, taking fourth place in the long jump during the morning’s field events. Scarlett McClelland claimed her spot at the next stage with fourth place in the 100m sprint. The Lady Cards had their best outing in the 4X200m relay race with the combined efforts of Kaitlyn Torres, Kloee Woytek, Mariah Woods and TiYana Celestine. Woytek went on to qualify for Regionals in the individual 200m dash with a fourth-place finish. Columbus also had many competitors who just missed out on qualifying for Regionals. One of those athletes was Kaylea Foster who took fifth place in the 3200m run just a few seconds ahead of fellow Lady Card Chloe Ross. The relay team of Woods, Celestine, Morrow and McClelland placed in the fifth spot in the 4X100m sprints. Torres was another fifthplace finisher in the 100m dash. Rylee Strieder took fifth place in the 300m hurdles race while JaLeigha Wilson took fifth place in the discus throw competition. Morrow and McClelland took sixth and seventh in long jump respectively, and McClelland also added another seventh-place finish in the 200m dash.

The boys were led by the district champion sprinter Ty’Vone Whitehead as he clocked in a couple of regional qualifying performances. He finished in second place for his best event in the 100m sprint to move on to the next level. Whitehead also finished in fourth for the 200m dash. He began his day with an eighth-place finish in the long jump competition. Josafat Galvan was one place from qualifying for Regionals after falling to fifth place in the 1600m run. Elijah Owen took seventh place in the longer, 3200m run.

The advancing Cardinals will return to Seguin on April 28 and April 29 to take on the regional meet for a chance to move on to the State Championships.
