RHS T&F led by regional qualifiers, near-misses in area meet

SEGUIN – The varsity track and field team for the Rice Raiders had a few high-quality performances as they had several athletes compete in the Area competition last week. The Raiders ran into some high-tier competition as they faced off against several of the top athletes in the area. By the end of the competition, the Raiders had collected a lone medal in a field event, one other regional qualifier, and a number of athletes who just missed out on taking a top four spot and qualifying for the regional meet this week.

The Raiders’ top performance of the day went to Robert Myers who claimed Rice’s only medal of the day. He finished with a silver medal after claiming second place in the shot-put toss, securing a second trip to Seguin and a spot in Regionals. Long-distance runner Kejun Wilson will be joining Myers at the regional meet after taking one of the four qualifying spots in the 800m run. Wilson finished in fourth place, just a couple spots ahead of teammate Jael Valles Serrano who finished in sixth place. Rice’s other long-distance runners missed out on claiming a regional spot as Payton Engelbrecht and Lance Dingler took sixth place and eighth place respectively in the 3200m run. Valles Serrano and Dingler came back to compete in the 1600m run, taking sixth and eighth place respectively in the event. Dyren Johnson and Jon Woods each claimed a sixth-place finish in the discus throw and high jump events respectively. Jace Upson was one of the team’s near misses as he took fifth place in the 110m hurdles. The lone Lady Raider representing Rice also nearly qualified for the regional meet after being just milliseconds from taking fourth place and finishing in fifth for the 100m hurdles.
