WEIMAR – The Schulenburg/ Weimar Parents as Teachers held a group connection safety training on Thursday, April 13, at the First United Methodist Church.
Hardy Hay, retired Houston Homicide Investigator and current Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy, gave a presentation on situational awareness. Hay also serves as an anti-terrorism/force protection officer for the U.S. Army. He has 39 years of experience in personal protection.
His presentation consisted of tips on being aware of your surroundings and what to do when you find your surroundings to be dangerous. He introduced Cooper’s Color Code of Awareness, a system divided into five categories of awareness ranging from white, yellow, orange, red, and black. He also introduced the OODA (observe, orient, decide, act) loop, a four-step system of deficient making that focuses on filtering information putting it into context quickly and making an appropriate decision.
Jesus Martinez, co-owner of Texas Fight Lab in Weimar, gave Jiu-Jitsu techniques on how to escape if someone were to attack or try to abduct you. Martinez is a blue belt under Chad Kight of the Royce Gracie Lineage. He has been doing MMA for six years and jiu-jitsu for four years. He teaches adult and children’s classes at Texas Fight Lab and has coached several amateur fighters, one of whom is a current champion. Martinez teaches self-defense and jiu-jitsu in Flatonia and Weimar and competed in jiu-jitsu all over Texas. Martinez gave step-by-step instructions, demonstrations and handson training on how to use the techniques he taught.
This one-hour training was split into two groups of 30-minute sessions.
After the sessions, dinner was provided and Hay and Martinez facilitated a Q&A with the attendees.
