The John Everett Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution of Columbus has selected its scholarship winners for 2023.
Each year, the chapter gives $600 scholarships to three outstanding Colorado County students. This year the winners are D’Trique Fitzgerald of Columbus High School, Ashlee Owers of Rice Consolidated High School and Tanner Konvicka of Weimar High School. The chapter said an anonymous donor increased each of these awards up to $1,000 each this year.
Beyond their good grades, the chapter said each of the awardees has volunteered in their communities and is active in extracurricular activities at their school.
Fitzgerald intends to attend Rice University and study business. Konvicka plans to attend Texas State Technical College in Waco to study welding technology. Owers will be attending Blinn College with the goal of becoming a veterinary technician. “Given their accomplishments to date, there is little doubt they will each achieve their goals,” Scholarship Committee Chair Jana Semler said. According to a release, any woman is eligible for membership in the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She must be eighteen years of age and descended from a man or woman who served, with unfailing loyalty in the cause of American Independence.
