The Weimar Ladycats have been one of the top 2A teams in Texas this season, ending a regular season with one of their strongest seasons and a high placement in the TGCA state softball poll. The third ranked team in the state proved why they were in the top five for a large part of the season by finishing the regular season with a 14-game win streak that led the Ladycats to their top state ranking as well as the district title. With just one loss in district play, Weimar held on for the first-place spot in the standings after outlasting both Shiner and Ganado who finished in second and third place respectively. After a huge 19-0 blowout over Flatonia, the Ladycats played a postseason warmup against the Columbus Lady Cardinals who are also ranked in the TGCA poll to get ready for their first-round, playoff matchup against Falls City on Thursday, April 27.
The Ladycats big win against Flatonia to end the season got their postseason warm up started early as the team had one of their most complete games in the near 20-point shutout victory. The Ladycats got their scoring started early as they opened the game on the road with a nine-run inning in the top of the first. They followed up with five runs in the second to add further pressure on their opponents. Weimar had a scoreless third inning before adding six more runs in the fourth to put the game away and force a mercy- rule finish. The Ladycats racked up 17 hits as they overwhelmed Flatonia with base hits and quality baserunning.
There were several Ladycats who had strong days at the plate as they hope their effective hitting translates against strong pitching in the postseason. Reagan Wick and Kaelyn Williams had the best days from the plate as they put up four hits each. Wick had a fantastic day offensively as two of her hits were homeruns, knocking out a pitch in the first and fourth innings on the way to seven total RBIs. Paige Pavlu added three hits while Izzy Reeves picked up two as the only other Ladycats with multiple hits in the game.
Wick not only had an effective game on offense, but she dominated on the other side as well. In four innings of work, Wick struck out eight batters while walking just one as she cruised to a no-hitter and helped an error-less Weimar defense hold Flatonia to the team’s 14th shutout victory of the season and their second in a row.
