Commissioners approve proclamations, discusses speed limit on county roads

COLUMBUS – The Colorado County Commissioners held a regular meeting on April 10.

During the meeting, Colorado County Judge Ty Prause read a proclamation recognizing April 2023 as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.

The proclamation reads in part: “Child Abuse Prevention occurs every day through the diligent work and tireless advocacy undertaken by the Colorado County families, friends, neighbors, houses of faith, advocacy groups, nonprofit organizations, schools, health care providers, social workers, and government agencies to support children and families and every community....Together we can create a brighter future for children, families and communities to follow our county and ensure tomorrow’s leaders have the support they need to thrive and reach their potential.”

Nicole Guillory, operations director of CASA for Kids of South Central Texas, thanked the commissioners for their support. She said their organization has been working hard at keeping families together. Guillory also provided the court with an update: “In 2022, our agency served 127 children with 60 volunteers. Our volunteers provided 4,010 hours of advocacy and traveled 38,795 miles.”

The CASA program serves children in Austin, Colorado, Waller and Washington counties.

Judge Prause read another proclamation before the court about recognizing April 30-May 7 as Soil and Water Stewardship Week.

The proclamation reads in part: “Whereas, healthy soil and clean water is a benefit to everyone, and whereas effective conservation practices provide the soil our natural plants and air temperature rich standards and whereas our security depends on the robustness of natural resources and whereas stewardship calls for each person to help conserve.”

The court also approved the motion.

The commissioners also held a public hearing to receive public comments regarding a proposal to establish a speed limit of 35 miles per hour on County Roads 212 and 273 in Precinct 2. Commissioner Ryan Brandt led the discussion. Brandt said the current speed limit for the roads is 60 miles per hour. He also said the roads are highly used and that 35 miles per hour would be a more comfortable speed. No public comments were made.

The court approved the new speed limit.
