Shutouts, blowouts define Lady Cards dominant week

The Columbus Lady Cardinals have pushed their way to the #20 spot in the TGCA state rankings after a stretch of some of their best ball this season. Following last week’s competitions, the Lady Cards pushed their win streak to 10-straight games with an average margin of victory of just over eight runs. The offense has been a major factor for their victories as they have matched their season- high 15 runs on four separate occasions during the streak. They matched that high point run total once again in a big win against Yoakum following a shutout victory against Palacios earlier in the week.

Last February, I remember asking my teachers, “Do you think this cycle will go by fast?” They would laugh and say, “At the end, you will realize just how fast the 22 weeks will go.” Now, as I sit here writing this article on April 5, I laugh when I think about it. Time is passing fast.

Wildcats drop two games in district chase
Wildcats drop two games in district chase

The Weimar Wildcats are beginning to slow down in their chase to reach the top of the district standings. After a strong start to their district season, the Wildcats have taken a few losses in a row along with some other defeats to bring some uncertainty to their final place in the district standings at the end of the season. Weimar will at least be hoping to secure a postseason position, but their crusade took a step backwards after a loss last week against Schulenburg, and another loss to Ganado during Monday’s make-up game due to a weather cancellation.

Weimar softball shuts out Schulenburg, takes district lead

The Ladycat softball team just had the ideal week in regard to their chances at taking the district championship. TGCA’s sixth-ranked Ladycats have been on a path to prove that they are the best team in the district all season, and they made a huge step towards that goal after an undefeated week against a few of the top teams in the district. After a big shutout win against Schulenburg to start the week, the Ladycats got themselves ready for a matchup against Ganado, the team that shared a tie with Weimar for first place in the district. The Ladycats survived a slow start to take a victory that secured the lead in the district standings with only a few games remaining in the regular season.

No. 25 ranked Lady Cards stay tied for district lead

The mission has been clear for the Lady Cards’ softball team after tying the season series against fellow district leader Hallettsville a few weeks ago. Their goal: win out for the rest of the regular season and give themselves a chance to either tie for the district championship or win it if the Brahmettes stumble a bit to end the season. To prevent their own stumbles on the way to that goal, the Lady Cards made sure to play solid games against Industrial on Tuesday, April 4 and then again on Monday, April 10 against Tidehaven. Offense and defense came together perfectly for Columbus as the 25th ranked team in the TGCA poll won both games by large margins.
