Weimar Junior High track squads take top three in district

The Weimar Junior High School track teams had impressive outings in the district championship meet to end the season. Every team but the seventh- grade boys finished in the top three of the team standings, and the seventh-grade girls were just one medal away from taking the district’s championship spot.

Every team but the seventh- grade boys finished in the top three of the team standings, and the seventh-grade girls were just one medal away from taking the district’s championship spot.

WJHS Ladycats

Both the seventh and eighth grade teams had strong outings as the seventh graders took second place and the eighth graders took third place as a team. For the seventh grade Ladycats, they claimed their position after a high number of gold medals and even more non-gold medals. They found a lot of success on the track as 11 of their medals came from those events. Zariah Sims took first place in the 100m dash, while Addisyn Olive had a rare tie for first in the 200m sprint. Olivia Noska took the top spot in the 800m run, and a trio of Ladycats took the top three spots in the 2400m run as MJ Griffin, Noska and Karina Martinez finished from first to third respectively. Griffin also took first place in the 1600m run with her teammate Zulema Perez taking the bronze medal in the event. Kailea Burley Took first in the 10m hurdles and the relay team of her, Sims, Olive and Guadalupe Gil Grimaldo combined to take first place in the 4X200m relay. Ty’Rianna Rhodes took first in both the shot put and discus throws, while Victoria Sherwood finished in fourth for shot put and second in discus. Olive had a strong day on the field as well, taking gold in the triple jump and the high jump.

The eighth-grade girls took their third-place finish with a number of points from non-gold finishes. Tate Griffin took gold in the 800m run, and Addison Zinnante took gold in the 1600m run as the only first-place finishers for the Ladycats. Zinnante also claimed a bronze medal in the 2400m run . Cayla Fain claimed second place in the 800m run not far behind Griffin. Griffin along with Kimberly Rubio, Ruby Alamilla and Peyton Lumsford combined for first place in the 4X200 relay race. Skylar Rhodes had a strong throwing day, taking silver in the shot-put toss and bronze in the discus throw. Griffin added another pair of silver medals in field events with second place in both the triple jump and the pole vault.

WJHS Wildcats

The eighth graders had the standout performance on the boys’ side of the bracket, taking third place as a team. They were led by Ty Chmmelik who had gold medals in both the 300m hurdles and the pole vault competition. Caden Booker finished in a tie for second in the pole vault to bring home another medal for the Wildcats. Ladon Vacek added a silver medal with his second-place finish in the 200m dash, and third place in the 100m dash. Jorge Alvarez finished the shot-put toss in third place for the team’s final medaling performance.

The seventh-grade boys sent just two athletes to compete in the shop put competition. Brady Montgomery led the way with fourth place while Inaki Alvarez took sixth in the event.
