Weimar softball shuts out Schulenburg, takes district lead

The Ladycat softball team just had the ideal week in regard to their chances at taking the district championship. TGCA’s sixth-ranked Ladycats have been on a path to prove that they are the best team in the district all season, and they made a huge step towards that goal after an undefeated week against a few of the top teams in the district. After a big shutout win against Schulenburg to start the week, the Ladycats got themselves ready for a matchup against Ganado, the team that shared a tie with Weimar for first place in the district. The Ladycats survived a slow start to take a victory that secured the lead in the district standings with only a few games remaining in the regular season.

Vs Schulenburg, W, 10-0 The Ladycats flexed their defensive capabilities in a big win over Schulenburg on Tuesday, April 4. Led by another impressive performance from Reagan Wick, Weimar shut out the Lady Horns through six innings of play. While the defense was performing at a high level, the offense was having a strong day as well supporting the defensive effort. After scoring just one run through the first two innings, the Ladycats exploded for five runs in the third to break the game open. Weimar played another scoreless inning in the fourth before scoring three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to push the lead to double digits and force the officials to call the mercy-rule defeat near the end. Weimar outhit Schulenburg by a 7-1 margin as they received a stellar performance from Izzy Reeves at the plate who led the team with two hits and three RBIs.

Wick had a strong game on the mound as she had a leading role in keeping the Lady Horns scoreless. She struck out 13 batters and allowed just a single hit while the defense played cleanly behind her with no errors in the game.

Vs Ganado, W, 4-1

Weimar’s biggest game of the season did not have a great start as it took the Ladycats a few innings to get their offense going. Weimar went scoreless in each of the first two innings while allowing a single run by Ganado in the bottom of the second. The defense played a major role in keeping things close while the offense shook the dust off. The Ladycats did not concede another run after the Lady Indians lone score in the second.

It did not take long for the Weimar bats to return to normal after Ganado applied the pressure with the first run of the game. The Ladycats responded with two runs in the third to take the lead over their opponents. They added two more insurance runs in the fifth and continued playing excellent defense to secure the victory and the first-place spot in the district standings. If Weimar can win out against Louise and Flatonia who enter the week in sixth and fifth place respectively in the district standings, they will be crowned the district champions as they look to have a second-straight, deep postseason run.
