Wildcats drop two games in district chase

The Weimar Wildcats are beginning to slow down in their chase to reach the top of the district standings. After a strong start to their district season, the Wildcats have taken a few losses in a row along with some other defeats to bring some uncertainty to their final place in the district standings at the end of the season. Weimar will at least be hoping to secure a postseason position, but their crusade took a step backwards after a loss last week against Schulenburg, and another loss to Ganado during Monday’s make-up game due to a weather cancellation.

Vs Schulenburg, L, 4-2

The Wildcats could not repeat the offensive success they had against Louise when they faced off against Schulenburg at home on Tuesday, April 4. Weimar could not consistently get players on base, and they also had limited opportunities to score when they did create some baserunners. There were a few Wildcats that made an impact with their limited opportunities as Hudson Ervin and Brady Henke each knocked a double with their only hits of the game.

The Wildcats not only had some difficulties on the offensive end, but they also struggled to get Schulenburg batters out at the plate and on the basepath. While Weimar stayed within striking distance for the entirety of this game, they could not get the big swing to cut further into the lead. The setback dropped their district record to 5-4 as they gave up the advantage they created from starting the district season 4-2.

Vs Ganado, L, 6-5

Weimar suffered another loss in heartbreaking fashion as they came very close to taking a victory as they had a few innings in which they did most of their damage. The Wildcats’ offense returned in this game as they were able to cycle through the lineup and create some opportunities on the bases. Camden Morrison helped Weimar cash in on some of those opportunities, finishing with a team-leading two RBIs for the offense. Ethan Stech added one as well as Weimar got their work in on the offensive end mostly during the second, fifth and sixth innings. The Wildcats did a solid job of keeping good plate discipline, finishing with just three strikeouts from the Weimar batters. The Wildcats found ways to get the ball into play and forced the Ganado defense to make plays for each out.

Despite a decent level of success on the offensive side of the ball, the Wildcats ran into some familiar difficulties on the defensive end as they allowed Ganado to stay just ahead on the scoreboard throughout the game.

The Wildcats still have time to turn things around and climb in the district standings. With five games left, including some against teams Weimar has already beaten, the Wildcats hope to be in prime position to take one of the coveted playoff spots by the end of the season.
