The Columbus Lady Cardinals have pushed their way to the #20 spot in the TGCA state rankings after a stretch of some of their best ball this season. Following last week’s competitions, the Lady Cards pushed their win streak to 10-straight games with an average margin of victory of just over eight runs. The offense has been a major factor for their victories as they have matched their season- high 15 runs on four separate occasions during the streak. They matched that high point run total once again in a big win against Yoakum following a shutout victory against Palacios earlier in the week.
Vs Palacios, W, 10-0
Columbus did not have to stress much in a relatively straight forward victory against the Sharkettes. The combined success of pitchers Mia and Mayson Post helped the Lady Cards hold on to the victory and supported the strong effort from Columbus at the plate. That strong effort included seven hits to Palacios’ two, as well as eight drawn walks from Palacios pitchers. The Lady Cards quickly grabbed control in this game by scoring many early runs and holding the Sharkettes to a difficult offensive night. The Columbus defense did suffer two errors in the game, but they played a relatively clean game overall despite their few mistakes.
Offensively, there were many Lady Cards who contributed to the double-digit victory, but none more than Ashlyn Carter who batted in four runs on the night for the teamlead in RBIs. Karlee Mathis led the way with two hits to lead the Lady Cards while Taylor Morrow, Mia Post and Sophia Wolters added one hit each to keep the offense effective.
Vs Yoakum, W, 15-1
The Lady Cards continued their effective offensive attack with a huge win in the penultimate game of the season. They nearly finished with a second-straight shutout after a strong performance on the mound from Mayson Post and Karlee Mathis who combined to allow five total hits from their opponents. Their pitching, along with another relatively clean game from their fielders, led to the Lady Dogs scoring just one run in the third inning.
While the defense was busy shutting out their opponents, the offense was picking apart the opposing defense with a flood of baserunners and scores. The Lady Cards drew 10 walks in the game while adding eight hits and 12 RBIs after a successful day in the batter’s box. Columbus had their biggest innings of the game in the bookend innings, scoring five runs each in the first and seventh innings. They found success in between as well, scoring two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Taylor Morrow, Mayson Post and Mia Post took leading roles on the offense by batting in three runs each. Molly Garcia finished with the team lead in hits with two.
If the Lady Cards pick up the victory against Edna in their final regular season game, they will complete their part in trying to break a tie between them and their fellow district leaders in Hallettsville. The Brahmettes play against Tidehaven on Tuesday as the district championship race heads to the wire.
